What's so F'in great about Nascar?

I seriously don't get it. I mean i'll admit i just recently got turned on to motorsports, but Nascar is so booooooring compared to Rally or LeMans, or anything without an oval track. I mean do these half brain hicks in the middle america really get a kick outta watching cars going in a circle for 3 hours? For me its almost like watching ice skating at the Olympics --> It only gets interesting if someone crashes/falls. Now that speedvision is going almost full on Nascar thank goodness for the X-Games.

Hey Westside, maybe I jumped on you way to harsh in the MK4 forums. I agree with the thumbs up for NASCAR.

Hey, you dont understand NASCAR, big deal. A lot of america doesn't understand why we even get attached to cars. So what puts you in a place to look down at ppl that like a certain type of motorsports?
But personally I think Bill France is the reason for restricting the engineering knowledge of the US. On the other hand the late Smokey Yunick was IMO one of the greatest engine builders in history, and he was spawned from the ranks of nascar mechanics.

Back in the '70's, they were just introducing NASCAR race cars that could turn both left and right (before that time, they only had about 10 degrees of turning angle to the right). Know what they used to call them?
Give up?

put a cork in the toilet, flush and watch. You'll get the thrill of turning left all day long

I'd rather watch the neighboor kids race eachother in their 10 speed Schwinns.

Maybe if NASCAR emphasized leaps of technological innovation rather than "strategery" (sic) and drafting, American cars wouldn't be so pathetic.

NASCAR is enjoyable for people who want to see the whole track from their seats, who want to feel like they are driving exactly the same make of car as Bobby Labonte, and don't really want to put too much thought or effort into understanding racing. NASCAR is fluffy and a bit over the top, but it is a legitimate form of racing and many people enjoy it.

I hate NASCAR because they have simply bullied their way into market saturation. ESPN's RPM Tonite, please, that show is still NASCAR biased to all get out, and they can't even show video clips! NASCAR Tech is one big NASCAR sposnors infomercial, and thos other FOX shows are a joke, the guys on those shows are as dry as the Mojave Desert. Soon you will be able to get pure unadultered NASACR from 3-12 every night, none of those pesky WRC, F1 or Superbikes. I am soo glad to see NASCAR's foray into sportscars going sour like week old milk, Grand Am is finding out that NASCAR for sports cars doesn't work.

It's a quote from the movie "Days of Thunder." The movie is about Nascar... I don't see how it's narrow minded??

So many pretty colors, spinning 'round and 'round....
Seriously, NASCAR is popular because it has action (not advanced engineering, but fast all the same), media-cultivated personalities, and people can cheer for their favorite team. Basically, it's the same as any other TV-savvy sport. For a lot of people, it's great.
While I can be a snob, I simply can't begrudge people for liking Wonder Bread, Cheese-in-a-Can, Disneyworld, or Winnebagos. (I like Winnebagos too.) If people are happy, the business is making money, and they don't hurt anyone - has the advancement of the American auto REALLY been held back by NASCAR (I say only to a minor extent) - why not?
