Basically, everything from the firewall back is all one piece (i.e., the chassis or frame of the car), excepting the doors, hatch, etc. Everything underneath is one piece, stamped at the factory. The result/benefit is a more rigid chassis with less structural squeaks and/or weak points. That's the idea as I understand it, anyway...

Yr absolutely right, the car doesnt ride on a "frame" everything is one piece to which subframes (front and rear suspension) are mounted. This also makes for a lighter car. Where the Mk IIIs not unibody??? I bet they where.

Unibody = no true frame. Best examples of body on frame construction are a pickup truck or the RWD Crown Vic/Mercury Grand Marquis. Most cars these days are Univbody.
MK1-4 are all Unibody.

Just what i was thinking Boston, I mean a 69 Camaro is unit body, so Im sure VW had it.

mk2,3,4 are unibody and I'm almost positive that mk1 are too

I think each succeeding generation of VW gives you better welding, tighter body panel gap tolerances, etc., which is part of the reason the Mk4 chassis is stiffer than that of the Mk3, etc...
