Can anyone fill me in? I'm seeing a lot of them over here (in New Zealand) and they look awesome! Is the A3 based on an Audi or a VW platform and does it cost a lot more? How come we don't get them in North America. The black ones look sick!

Also there's a lot of 4Motion GTIs over here. Dammit!

Why doesn't VW bring these puppies into Canada. Is there honestly more of a market here (5 million people) then there is back home? I don't believe it.

They make the A3 in a FWD version, they also make the S3 that is nice. I was in Germany, and I was looking at them. The only difference between the A3 and a GTI is a couple of inches I think. Different body, of course. The only reason we don't get them, is the same reason we don't get half the cars over here. Either 1, its not meeting US Standards somewhere, or 2 VAG maybe thinks it will take away from sales of the GTI (would be my guess) We are supposedly getting the A3 in I think like 2005. I didn't like what it is supposed to look like.....

But then again, why would they make the Phaeton ? that definatly takes away sales from Audi

What's the difference between the A3 and the S3? What kind of standards wouldn't this car meet?

A3 Front WD. (1.8T 180hp)(1.8T 150hp)(1.9TDI 130hp)
S3 Quattro All WD (225 hp)

Nah, I'm thinking that the hatchback market is already pretty small. Not many people were interested in the a couple of years ago.

Ok guys the pic shows a GTI with Audi S3 wheels and the A3 is actually an Audi S3.
The Audi A3 was first model to be launched on the Golf MkIV platform. Its sold in Europe with 1.6 and 1.8 litre engines and 1.9litre TDiS, power outputs range from 90BHP (the slowest Diesel) to 225bhp (the S3). 180, 210 and 225BHP models all run the Quattro drive train, which is the same transmission as the Golf 4-motion.
The biggest difference between the two cars is the price - Audi charge approx £2000 ($3300) more for a similar spec car.
VW group cars made on this platform are Audi A3/S3, Audi TT, VW Bettle, Golf, Jetta/Bora, Seat Leon, Toledo and Skoda Octavia. There's no way that Golf looks better than the S3, maybe the picture doesn't show it, but the S3 is also wider tan a GTi. I'd kill to own one of those Audis, specially theS3.
If you like the A3 or the S3 you can purchase them in Mexico, but let me warn you that the prices would be significantly higher. The price for an S3 is $43,000US, and what really gets me is that most of the difference between the price in Europe ($33,000)and Mexico is taxes!

I went to Germany and looked at the A3 while I was over there. It was really roomy on the inside. I really couldn't tell, but I think the S3 was basically the TT with the A3 body on it. I didn't know you could get them in the Mexico though. But $43000 for hatchback is REALLY pricey. Might as well buy an S4 at that point. In my opinion, the reason the A3 has yet to come here, is that who would spend all that money (except me) on a hatchback with an Audi name on it. Audi in the US seems to shoot after "Yuppy" business class people. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I'm just saying, it seems that market for Audi is not that of someone who wants a hatchback. Thats what they have the TT here for. Its a "sportier" Audi, without dropping S4 money, or buying a Volkswagen.
