We are in the market for a new vehicle, and have noticed that the prices on used A8's have dropped like stones. You can get a low mileage 99 4.2 model in the mid-$30K range, or about the same price as the low and midrange BMW's and Volvos we have looked at. How reliable are these used A8's? Any good message boards?

Re: Whats the opinion of the Audi A8?? (Zinhead)

You can try http://www.audiworld.comand their A8 forum: http://forums.audiworld.com/a8/.
Personally I'd buy a well-kept A8 over any other used cars in the same price range.

Edit: just checked the forums, and this thread deals with buying a used A8.

Well, in that whole class (top-end-luxury) the cars have horrible resale values. The value of the car drops for the first 3-4 years, and then levels out for a while (around $25,000) Most original owners lease for two years, and then get a new one.

Used A8s are very good value, but when checking cars out, be sure, be 200% sure that they never have been in accidents. Because the bodies on these cars are all aluminum, many body shops are not qualified to proper repairs.

Sometimes you can find used A8s for about the same cost as A4s of the same year. Since the car is build mostly out of aluminum, body parts are not readily available and are pretty expensive, which usually results in high insurance premiums. Also, since it's a rare aluminum car, most shops will not work on them, so you are stuck taking it to the dealer every time.
If you can live with that, they are great and beautiful cars, a good used-car buy.

If you can live with the fact that A8's aluminum body has to repair at Audi certified body shop each time on a collision, also more expensive insurance. A8 is a beautiful car.

I'd be happy with the regular 2.8 V6 or the 2.5 TDI V6 as well. Speed is not the most important thing with this car, rather gliding in style. Besides, here in Euro, power is not as necessary as in US anyways.

Yeah, get a 1998 or new A8. The 1997 A8 has the 4spd automatic which, excuse me french, is a piece of ****e.
Also beware maintenence costs. Somebody was talking in the A4/S4 forums here on VW Vortex of an A8 that needed $1500 for a timing belt change. Personally I think all engines should come with timing chains and whoever invented the timing belt should be shot!

Yup! My dad has a 97 A6 with the 4 speed, and the car is an absolute dog. Our 2.0 Jetta does better than it.

The A8 never had a 4-speed auto. The autos were all 5-speeds. The 1997's didn't have Tiptronic control however.

Previous A6 is basically a revised 100-series, its 4-speed auto shares with 90-series which is different than all the units used after. All 97 A8s used 5-speed auto until it changed to Tiptronic in 98.
