What's up with the check engine light???

Hi ppz...
About two weeks ago, my check engine went on and I made an appointment with the dealer to check it out. They weren't able to schedule me an appointment until early March. Anyways, two days ago for some reason my check engine goes away and just last night, it goes back on. What's up with that...anybody have that problem? I have two questions...is it safe to drive with the engine light on and off sporadically? and what are the possible reasons for the engine light to go on?

could be numerous things, do you have any mods done to your car?
If you drive down to Allentown, PA area, I could meet you with a vag-com and help find out what's wrong... Or look for someone with a vag-com in the NY area..

it happened on my dub few months ago... don't worry unless it lights up again

I have no mods...
BTW, what does the VAG-COM do? I'd like to meet up with someone and see how it works...

I thought the manual says "do not drive the car when the check engine light on" or something to that effect. I also thought the check engine light only had to do with emissions.
So if the light comes on, is it ok to drive?

I believe (and hope) it's okay for a little while so long as it is not flashing.

the CEL can come on for a variety of reasons.. from low pressure in the gas tank, to emissions, to an engine that is about to go titsup..

It's not very unusual for the CEL to come on and will sometimes just go away after a certain number of drive cycles... if it's flashing then you know that something serious is wrong and you probably shouldn't drive it at all. $0.02
