whats up with the rear defroster???

Ok I have a very very thin coat of frost on my back window and side mirrors. So I put my rear defroster on. Start driving and about 5 minutes down the road check my rear view and not even a hint that the defroster is working.....10 minutes start to notice some results. 15 minutes the defroster cuts off and my window still isn't fully defrosted. WTF if this thing can't get rid of a thin coat of frost what will it do when it really starts to get cold out.
Is mine broken or is this the norm.

Mine cuts through ice like a hot knife
I flip mine on and usually within 5 minutes I shut it off because the window is clear. So in answer, no, what you have is not normal.

I'm having the same problem, too. I took it to the dealer, who checked all the connections and found "nothing wrong..." Is there some other type of diagnostic I should tell them to run?

To everyone with Tint:
How well does the defroster work with tint? Any disaster stories about rear defrosters and tint? My last car had zero problems but I am curious how well our defrosters work in this situation. As far as I can tell, my guy did a superb job along the wires.

No problems here. I'm all tinted up and the rear defroster works right away.
Re: whats up with the rear defroster??? (bjettin)

Mine works quite well. I used it in the snow going over Donner Pass this past weekend, and it melted the snow and de-fogged the window right away.

No problems with my tint; the defogger kills the fog reallllly quick.

Check to see that the fuse for the rear defogger isn't blown; there is a red 10amp fuse for the rear defogger.

Re: whats up with the rear defroster??? (Deception)

generally on a really cold day .. as most the days are here in Colorado, the defroster takes longer so it dont crack the glass.
If ur defroster fired up in less than 5 mins in colo, u would have a nice cracked window.
But how should i know .. i never drive my car in winter anyways

Re: whats up with the rear defroster??? (bjettin)

OK...so where do I find the red 10amp fuse for the rear defogger? Also, if blown, is it only available from the dealer (at a large mark-up, of course!)?

Re: whats up with the rear defroster??? (dkrutewicz)

I have had no problems at all and I have 20% tint on the back window. The defroster works great. Although I do live in florida, so I guess mine hasn't really been put to the test ...
I actually use my defroster?! Ok....all you northerners can laugh at me! I know I know...I don't even know what snow is!
Re: whats up with the rear defroster??? (bjettin)

my rear defrost works great, but for ice and snow i'd rather scrap (the melted water makes a mess of the rear end)
BOOO to snow; i need to live in florida

cheers

automotive fuses should be avialable at a local Radio Shack or a Kragen's or something similar.
They're color coded and look like candy ( at least to me they do) w/ pins sticking out.
