Re: What's you favorite car from the year you were born ? (MEIN_VW)
My year was such a great year for automobiles, it makes it hard to pick just one!
With the classic years of the Camaro vs the Mustang, and Carroll Shelby playing around underneath the Mustang hood, and the British invasion of gorgeous bodied cars...Italy hitting their stride, with Ferrari still at the top of the heap...
The Ferrari 365GTB4 has been mentioned from another year, but 1968 was its FIRST year in production.
There was the car that was ont he top ten list during EVERYONE's birth year, the Porsche 911 - with my favorite form my year being the 1968 912 soft-window Targa.
The Maserati Mistral was a great looking Italian - but one ocmpany which hit their absolute peak in design and performance from Italy that year was Lamborghini.
1968 Lamborghini Muira P400:
The Muira is still considered by many to be one of the most gorgeous vehicles ever produced, and with its 12 cylinder engine was a cruising GT with the ability to reach over 170MPH.
1968 Lamborghini Espada:
A larger touring sedan with intriguing lines from Lambo...not as loved, but it always did something for me.
Then there was BMW - not known in the late 60s for particularly stunning designs like it had been in the early 50s...but still one of the best, and most fun cars ever produced, was the 2002. I particularly like the Alpina editions.
1968 BMW 2002 Alpina:
Even VW made what I think was a gorgeous car, which I would love to see come back in "retro" form like the New Beetle and Microbus...
1968 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia:
I have always loved Ghias, whether coupe or convertible, and still think they have great lines.
Speaking of great lines, and going back to that man named Carroll...all bow their heads and pray to the performance God and target icon of every perfomance car ever built:
1968 AC Cobra 427:
But as far as designs go, the English really had their pencils sharpened. They made absolutely perfect "gentlemen's" cockpits, with just the right aroma, and materials, and the exterior designs were elegant, sporty and aggressive. One car which stunned the automotive community when it debuted, and one which looked like it was in motion and ready to pounce at any moment, was the absolutely gorgeous:
1968 Jaguar XKE "E-Type" Roadster:
Even in the "bubbleback" 2+2 design, the car has fantastic lines, and only looks 10 times better in person.
Man, 1968 - What a great year in Automobiles!! And the World got me too!!
