Ditto. Wheel locks are good, but they aren't 100% efective. Any pro theif probably has every wheel lock key known to man. My advice would be to find a lock brand that is sold in Europe or Japan, as the keys wouldn't be as common over here. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Wheel locks???? (surefooted)

i had some awesome ones on my old 16v... i think i got them from ron's parts. its been a while so i dont remember exactly what they are called... eurolocks is coming to mind.
they were cool, because they fit over the lug nut, and inside the hole in the wheel, so without the key (which fit on your keyring - like a normal key), there was no gettin em off... unless you had a drill and plenty of time to spare.
i did some looking, and found them at a place called (dont laugh) toad auto

What about those wedged lock nut removers that you beat on with a hammer then unbolt with a wheel tool. I used on of those when I lost the key to my lock nuts. If a thief had a set of these, then at least you would hear your wheels being stolen

Also, any good machinist can make a key if he/she has an imprint of the locknut design. Just be careful where you park.

Yeah, I went with the McGard Wheel LockNuts too. I also like my wheel design becuase they wheelnuts lay at least 1" beneath the surface down into the nut hole.
I recommend you get The Club for the best anti-theft protection. That way even if they get your wheels off and then want to steel the car, they will not be able to steer the car. YES, I know, I am an genious and make a lot of sense!

Re: Wheel locks???? (Rugrat Anklebiter)

my car has mcguard ones on it, but the last owner messed up the key somehow, so i couldnt get 3 out of 4 wheels off when it came time to do snow tires...i went to the VW dealership where i work, and one of the mechanics had a box with about 10 or 15 different wheel lock sockets in it with numbers on them matching a code i had...he had a socket for basically every wheel lock, at least for VWs...just food for thought...PS i gotta remind myself to order a new key...hope i dont get a flat

Hey ya'll, take it from a guy who used to work on wheels and tires. McGard locks can be very difficult to take off. Gorilla locks are also very tough. If you deviate from those two brands, it only gets easier. A thief doesn't need a special "lock removal tool." You know what we used to take locks off in my old tire shop (and this is a major distributor) a socket and a hammer. You hold the socket on the lock, smack it on with a hammer and wrench it off. I used to be able to get locks off some cars with alarms and not set them off
All a thief needs to do to quiet the hammering down is a piece of tire rubber on the hammer. All you get is a dull and semi-quiet thud Anyways, both gorrila and mcgard can be removed with this method. Have you seen the gator grip sockets. The sockets with the pins that supposedly fit any nut? Well, if the lock isn't too tight, they work better than some keys! You can get the above locks (picture) off with a big screwdriver. Best defense, a sensitive, well tuned alarm. NO thief will stick around whe one is going off in his ear.

I dont remember if i have the mcguard or gorilla locks, but I went to discount tire in everett, wa and was hooked up with extra long locks and lug bolts to go along with my h&r spacers.

I have Gorilla's on my ride. The nuts are surrounded by the rim and I see no way for someone to hammer a socket over them. Plus the nuts are round - they use an internal key to remove them. Kinda see 'em?

Re: Wheel locks???? (Air_Cooled_Nut)

Eruolocks with Audi lug caps....
the eurolocks are only effective ive you have deep holes in your wheels for the lugs...the outer red ring is free rotating so no one can get around it and pull or turn it...however they can still probably force a fake key in or smash the lock mechanism...
I thought about getting several brands of wheel locks and having like 3 types per wheel. I figure even the best thief can't defeat three different types of locks without drawing attention to themselves...
The audi lug caps are like almost impossible to get off without an audi puller...of course they can get that at the dealership....
they have a device that locks to your valve stem...you put it on when you leave your car...if it senses movement...i.e. car is being stolen or wheels are being stolen then it releases all the air in your tire very rapidly. They can't get far with a flat. Problem is that might not stop them from steeling just the wheel. also if it sat like that for a length of time would it bend your rim?

the reason I don't have mcguard or gorilla is that I have wheel spacers and I haven't found any locking lugs that are long enough.

Re: Wheel locks???? (QuickStick)

Though that sounds like a neat device I wouldn't trust it. One, being exposed it probably could be defeated. Two, a decent alarm system will have a jacking/bumping trigger. Three, if they're stealing the wheel (this thread) no biggie. Four, it'd suck to have a false trigger and come back to FOUR deflated wheels and only ONE spare

There are neat little devices out there but I wonder if people who use/engineer them think them all the way through...

Yeah make sure you get good locks, I had my new rims on for like not even a week and some one tried to steel them, how do I know, I went to the body shop to find out what a noise was, he said my wheels were about to FALL off, except for the Lock Nut one!!! Damnn crooks!!! Damn NY!!

Re: Wheel locks???? (QuickStick)

You mentioned valve stems that deflate if they sense movement. That is kinda stupid. American Racing makes a detachable valve stem. Each wheel is fitted with a valve that can only be used with the detachable portion that you keep hidden. The detachable portion screws in and inflates normally. Once you detach it, there is no way to let air out. To the guy who bought gorilla locks from Discount Tire... Good idea, thats the company I used to work for. Since the lugs are counter-sunk, the thief needs to use a thinner-wall socket and a lot of caution. One miss with a hammer and he wha-bings the wheel. No point in taking it then. If the locks you have take a hex shaped key, they can take them off with a big allen wrench. If they use a goofy triangle shaped key, then a 3/8ths drive ratchet or breaker bar fits right in. I don't wanna sound like a killjoy here, but if I know this, then you can bet a thief does. Then again, have you ever seen americas dumbest criminals
