Production is slated to begin the first quarter of 2002 so I wouldn't expect cars in showrooms till March at least. The factory they will be produced in is also ramping up production of the Focus ZX5, so the SVT had to be pushed back a bit to make sure that everything was running smoothly.
Pay a visit to http://www.svtfocusonline.com for the latest information from Ford.
If you're looking for forum discussions on the car, we have an awesome forum at http://www.focaljet.com and have several SVT employees who are open and active participants there.
Here's a link to the SVT Focus specific forum.
A4Jetta - You have your delivery dates correct, but I can assure you that production won't begin in January. The last rumored date for Job 1 that we had was Feb 4th. I'm the SVT Forum Moderator at Focaljet and have been following the story and been in close contact with representatives from SVT for about 6months. I've actually been waiting for the car since Nov '00 when I got the first reliable rumour of it's existence from a Ford employee/friend.
Canuck - Yes, the ZX5 is out already, but I think Ford is trying to be cautious with both of these new models to ensure that they don't have a repeat of the Escape & Explorer vehicle introductions which suffered from many recalls. The N/A Focus itself, has seen it's fair share of recalls in the past year - nothing major but that is never good press. Also, with other manufacturers stumbling into the compact performance market with their own troubles (Nissan's SE-R to name one) I believe that SVT is making sure they've dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's on the SVT Focus before it hits the streets.
One more thing - A4Jetta:
Europe will already be getting a 5-door version of the SVT Focus. Their model is known as the ST170 in both configurations. SVT recently had a survey up on their website asking respondents what interest there may be in a 5-door US model and I believe the response they received was overwhelmingly positive. They haven't announced any firm plans to produce the vehicle for our market, but if they do you can expect it to be announced at next years Chicago Autoshow.
Hope this info helps, and one more thing - the official name is "SVT Focus" - not the other way around.
I saw a 5-door Focus on the road Sunday. I had seen them in commercials and thought that they looked much sharper in profile than the 3-door. Seeing one in the metal confirmed this impression. I would love to see a 5-door SVT Focus in this country. Especially one tricked out like the supercharged version shown at the SEMA show.
Well mutcth and some others expressed interest in adding their .02¢ to the future plans for the SVT Focus so I got in touch with the SVT Research & Planning Mgr. to find out what you could do since the Survey page is no longer active.
Apparently any combination would ultimately be possible, whether you prefer the idea of the ZX5 SVT, or even possibly a Focus Sedan or Wagon based SVT - just put it in a few words and send it to [email protected] with the subject line "Future Focii."
They're quite interested in the input from this group of car enthusiasts, so if you find the time and like the idea of having your voice heard by someone who can make a difference, send that email.
mutcth - Glad to help
audiness - The car we should really be sad about not getting is the Focus RS
It doesn't offer AWD like the Cosworth concept or WRC Focus does, but it's still a very impressive package. If you're not aware of the details on this car, visit http://www.fasterfords.com/rsfocus/index.htm for the story, images and even the borchure scans.
We can expect more powerful versions of the Focus in '04/'05 and hopefully then they will offer some kind of performance tuned AWD variant.
Peloton25, thanks for the info. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
The SVT Focus 5-door really doesn't have a lot of competitors on our shore. An SVT sportswagon probably only has WRX wagon as its sole competitor, except Mazda produce a MP3 Pro5 or something more powerful.
