I been seeing posts saying that Synthetic oil can really help with cold starting in the winter, but I can't find any Synthetic Diesel grade in the stores. The Autozone/Pep Boys/Strauss, etc... shops around all seem to have Rotella 20-50 and maybe one other brand of Dino Diesel oil and lots of Synthetic oil for gasoline engines, but no Synthetic for Diesels. What should I be getting and where do I get it?

My older brother runs a whole bunch of diesels for his excavation co. His favorite oil is 76 gaurdol QLT (not synthetic) -I use that now in my Scirocco. His mechanic swears that the engines he looks at that have used the Gaurdol qlt look better than anything else. That and maybe some Swepco 505 friction fighter would probably be very good. http://www.swepcousa.com/lubesite/add.htm

The K-Mart I went to only had regular rotella, not the synthetic.

So let me get this straight; we should use Synthetic in our Mk1 Diesels?

I just sold my 2001 TDI and I *had* to use Synthetic in it, but in my older Diesels, I've always just used regular "Diesel" oil.
How can synthetic oil help with cold starting?

I run Valvoline DureBlend in mine right now... Reason being is because I am transfering it over to Fully Synthetic when it gets cooler... I don't think that the previous owner put Synthetic in it, that's why I'm running about 3 changes of Durablend first... Then am gonna switch over to some nice synthetic stuff

Synthetic flows better when cold, so there's less drag on the engine from the oil pump. It also lubricates better when the engine is cold because it gets going quicker.
Even at operating temperature, most synthetics flow a little better and reduce the load on the engine from the oil pump. That can get you slightly better fuel mileage (1%-2% better is common), and a bit more power/torque to the wheels (every little bit helps in these cars).

WalMart here (Ohio) has Rotella synthetic 5w40 in gallon jugs for $13 or so. I just changed the oil in the caddy to this for the winter for the reasons Racer X noted above.
I'll probably use something heavier in the summer, maybe not. Rotella is a good dino oil, highly recommended by the big truck folks. I used Rotella 15w40 in my Dodge Cummins.

$13 for a gallon sounds pretty good, Mobil 1 is about $20-$25 a gallon? That's only twice as much as good dino oil.
I've used the 'diesel' rated oils (mostly 76 Gaurdol, but I have used RotellaT) in my gasoline Sciroccos for years, I understand they're not really any different than a regular oil, but a bit higher in the quality range.

Thanks folks, I checked the Walmart (I don't go there much, it's not that close) and sure enough, they have the Rotella T Synthetic for $12.77 per gallon.
