I went and talked to a guy the other day at the body shop and I think I'm gonna break down and get my baby painted. I really want to put the small (thin) molding on the side but am not sure where to get it. Was this a factory type molding that came on the euro GTi's? I guess an autobody supply place could match something up pretty close but....it would be cool to have the real deal! Sorta like this:
or this:

Don't US spec GTIs have the same exact molding?
If not, my GTI was weird... I have other reasons to believe that, too

My GTi does have the stick on molding but its sticks out further and is much squarer. The moldings on these cars are thinner and stay closer to the body?

Interesting.....
You could always call awesomeGTI store and work a deal with them. Then have em throw all the moldings in a Kamei grill spoiler box and ship it over. Also talk to vdubjim and see if he can find em.

i've seen this type moulding at autobarn stores. its stick on, and shiny, and thin just like the euro gti's. i've pulled my ugly us spec side mouldings off, and am planning on the same upgrade, but for now i'm going to leave it blank to make sure i want to add the moulding later on. i've removed the lower sill moulding too.

The Molding on the Euro Mk1 Golfs is clip-on, like it is on Mk1 Jettas. It kinda has a 'double-hump' to it, the lump on the top is larger. You cant se it from this pic, but its identical to mine on my Jetta

If you wanted to install this moling, you could, but you would probbly need to drill all the teeny holes in the swage line to install the clips to snap em on (they're 75 cents EACH).
OR you could just get the trim from an autobody supply store (I learne my lesson, thats where the new trim for my Jet is coming from. Good Luck on your project tho

This is the thick trim, isn't it?
I thought it looked relatively good, but I do see what you're talking about, Dave

My 77 had it when I got it, here is a pic of it before paint. It looked to me like late Beetle and Type 3 side trim could be used to replace it, it uses the same clips, but the lengths may be a bit off, so I'm sure that it would have to be trimmed.
I can't wait to see how it will look with the blue paint, but I am repainting it black so that it looks new.

Dave...I'll hook ya up with the part number I used on my GTI. I got stick-on moulding for my GTI. Its actually wheelwell moulding I think.
Altho...Matt was telling me he knows someone with an actual set of the european moulding if ya wanna spend some big money.

That sounds cool Mike, thanks! Yeah, I'll need something stick-on as the molding on there now is stick on so I can't use molding that requires clips. The wheel-well molding is a good idea as its pretty thin... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Isn't the euro clicp on trim metal like the US lower rocker trim? The fat US GTI trim was thick rubber. I have a set of the metal euro here for something, doesn't fit my rabbit, but not sure what it does fit.
