Re: Which are the better amps? (SurrealGTI)

Everyone seems to love the JL amps because they keep the same power no matter what load to put on them. This is the reason I don't like them. Work great with JL subs though. They don't need a lot of power anyhow.
Can't say either of them. All of the Rockford stuff I've ever had would cook eggs on a cold day (400.4, 800.2). And I haven't owned the JL because I've never had the need for the small power/high price.
http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif to Autotek, Crossfire, and HiFonics for mid-priced amps.

Re: Which are the better amps? (HyKlas)

The old Rockford crap was good, crude, but good. I run three of the old DSM amps in my G/F car. The new stuff is just silly garbage. JL's are fine for what they are.
I've run all kinds of amps. Phoenix Gold, Orion, RF, Kicker ZR's on and on and on.
For power and quality it doesn't get any better than Autotek mean machine and street machine. Thats all I run in my car. The stealth are fine as well. The mean machines are the only ones still made in the US however. Almost all of them are 1 ohm stable. I think I put out 1000 watts rms from my sub amp at 2 ohms. I think I only paid $350 for it with my hookup but they can be had from dealers cheap on ebay.
I still have a place in my heart for the old 6 channel A/D/S powerplates.
Now if I could just find a way to get those Mark Levinson's into the cabriolet.

Don't we all......
You need to get a hitch and a trailer......lol.
as to the original post....can I say neither? There are so many great amps out there, why buy into the marketing of either company?

How about Nakamichi amps? Taking into consideration the quality of the head units they produce, I would imagine that their amps should be decento too. Has anybody got any experience with them?

Thanks

The JL amps aren't cheap, but they're flexible. One common scenario: You've got a sub amp that puts out max power into a 2 ohm load, isn't 1 ohm stable, and you've got a 2ohm/coil DVC woofer. You either wire it for 1 ohm and watch the amp go into protection or bite the dust, or wire it for 4 and get half the power you should. Another (probably more common) scenario: you've got a 4 channel amp you want to run your mains with, and it puts out maximum power into 2 ohms. But your speakers (like most) are 4 ohms. Bummer.

I don't see why you wouldn't like that feature. It's not that they don't "gain" power on the smaller impedances, they just don't lose power on the higher ones.
That, and the built-in eq/crossover is rather handy.

Re: Which are the better amps? (vwgtirob)

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't want open up a new thread but I have a question related to these amps...
I basically want to power 6.5 Components and a 10" Sub. I was thinking of getting one of these setups:
1) One 4-ch. amp, say a 75x4 like the RF 600.4. With 75x2 to the components and correct me if I'm wrong, 150x1 or is 300x1 possible with the other 2 channels?
OR
2) One 250x1 amp for the sub and one 75x2 amp for the components.
What would you guys do?
Thanks

I would go with the JL amps. They have a very clean sound and are designed very well. The JL amps were designed by many of the same people who designed the PPI Art and powerclass series a few years back. Those were very solid amps as well. Back in the early 90's it was JL/MBQuart/PPI. You were guarrented SQ trophies with that setup.

Never buy amps before speakers. Always speakers first then find an amp to properly run them.

As for the 4 channel question... I don't see why that wouldn't work. If that's the route you want to take. And that amp would be 300 watts when bridged to a 4ohm load. This setup is a lot easier to wire and will give you the same result. It will drain more power than the other setup because of the A/B circuitry over the D circuitry. Doubt you will have any problems with only 450 watts of A/B though.
