Why do people think autos are that slow. I think my tranny is smooth as hell. Plus I am sure there's only like .2sec difference in 1/4 mile between stick and auto. I am gonna prove to ya all pretty soon
1.8t -> 180 hp, VR6 -> 174 hp, and 1.8t is lighter just couple facts.
180 hp manual will be even even with VR6 174 hp manual. With equal driving skills.

Because auto's are slower. There's more power loss in an automatic than in a standard, and you don't have as much control over what gear you're in as you do with a standard. A straight line drag makes it a little better, but if you're on a road course, you're really screwed. Same car, standard against automatic, the automatic will always be behind, assuming they get the same launch.
I didn't say anything about them not being smooth, but the gearchanges will also be slower in an auto than you can get in a manual.
There's nothing wrong with you having an auto. You just asked a question, and people are answering with what's probably the truth. Now, if he gets a bad launch, you've got a chance. If not, I'd say he would win.
