Who else hates vaccum leaks??

809 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Big Fundamental
So, I posted a little while back about having an erradic idle, respones came up with faulty O2 sensor, bad ISV, injector o-rings, etc. Well, I think that I've finally narrowed it down to a vaccum leak somewhere below the distributor, which really is of little to no help
Just the past 2 days it's been making a mad hissing while the engine is on. The car hasn't been loosing any oil or coolant, so I don't think that any important hoses are leaking, and the hissing goes away when the car turns off. This pisses me off though. I haven't been able to find the leak as of yet, but I just spent about 10 min under the hood just now. First, do you think my diagnosis is right? And second, do you have any suggestions on how to find this bastard so I can fix it?

And just because I like pictures. The oil is the "normal" 16v distributor oil leak, so whatever. This is where the stupid hissing is coming from

I think I got "it" the warm air box in the front or the starter, there a vaccum line going to it and it fell off on my car, BUT check the actuater in the box to see that it holds vaccum. Mine was so battered that there was a hugh leak in the. You can check it with your mouth or a vaccum gauge, I just chucked the box out. And it runs a bit rough warming up But it dosn't bother me enough to spend a lot at vw for a new one.

I had a hissing problem not so long ago, it was messing up my idle and the car even stalled on me.
I had changed the valve cover gaskets and I had not tightened enough the bolts that connect the two parts of the manifold together. It allowed unmetered air into the engine, causing it to idle bad and hiss quite loud...
Check it out, one minute is all it would take to know if that is the problem.

check at the manifold and see hows ur brake boster ruber pipe doing ...
and how is the rest of the vacum piping doing ...
rubber pipes tend to harden and crack ...

good luck ...

I don't know if you did this already; but one quick way to check for leaks is to get a can of carb cleaner and spray on any area you suspect is leaking while the car is idling. If there is a leak the carb cleaner will cause the idle to raise a little. this applies to intake tubes, vacuum lines, and/or injectors. I had an erratic idle and the idle would also be 'hunting'(fluctuate up and down) when I came to a stop. I went to checkers and bought about a 18" of rubber vacuum hose and replaced all the OEM 'fabric covered' hose. Everything from the mass air sensor to the egr lines etc. got replaced. End result: no more problems. Oh yeah, it cost about $2.
