Re: Who has 16s on their VR6? (the flying grape!)
You know I was gonna do the exact same thing this past spring. Was afraid to put 17's on cause of all the stories about bent rims....
I was buying used and for the life of me after 3 months I couldn't find 16's on the vortex I liked. Came across 17's and said what the hell. Love 'em and I'm never going back. A full summer's driving including 5 highway trips and not one dent , not one bend.
My advice is 2 part
1] If you're gonna run 17's go 215/40/17 vs 205's. I had 205's to start in the front and every bump was a
BANG or
SLAM Scared the bejesus out of me. Wore those out and went 215. Difference is night and day. You can't drive up curbs or anything but that extra rubber absorbs the bumps nicely.
2] Get strong wheels. Sure a 4 foot pothole will bend your rim but some wheels just plain suck. TSW [totally soft wheels] comes to mind . Its no wonder they've earned that name.
Other side of the spectrum : BBS RC's . $$$ but do you want to spend $ this year and then $ next year to replace your bent rims ? You can buy nice rims now or buy crap now and nice later.
