Who has a V5?

1092 Views 25 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  VertigoGTI
I'm wondering what the engine looks like, and if there are any specs on it. I'm still thinking about an engine swap on my car, but it's my rule that you should swap an engine that isn't available for you (the V5 isn't available in the US) This is just a feeler here, I'm still debating about an engine swap vs. the 2.0T.
Also, has anyone turboed a V5, similar to an old Audi????
Does anyone have the true specs on it, like compression, internals and what not? How many valves does it have per cylinder?

Re: Who has a V5? (vertigobora)

Dahlback Racing has a V5 on their GTi... its also got 900hp.. but thats a whole different story...
Re: Who has a V5? (vertigobora)

Dahlback racing, out of sweden I believe, uses a V5 from Audi, and produces a turbocharged 600-900 HP depending on the turbo setup they use. Visit their websight, http://www.dahlbackracing.com (I think, not sure) and check it out, plenty of info and specs Good luck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Who has a V5? (TimeOut20)

nope, the MK3 WE have the 2.0. The The MK3 DE are VR6's. He will be your b!tch.
Re: Who has a V5? (Wildabeast)

V5 != Audi INLINE 5... Dahlback uses the Audi 2.1L inline 5... the European Volkwagen V5 is quite different.

Yes, old 5 cyl is inline 5, 2.2l for VWs, 2.3l for Audi (different head).
Now VW uses V5, similar to VR6 but 1 cylinder less. It produces 150 hp, but don't remember the torq number. Anyway, it won't smoke 1.8t, they will be even.

Re: Who has a V5? (Doublearon)

it is actually a 2.3 liter VR5 (15 degree cylinder angle).... which is the same motor as the VR6 just short for one cylinder.. I think in 2001 they are 4 valves per cylinder makes 170 hp... before 2001 it has 2 valves per cylinder which makes 150 hp.... hope this helps

Re: Who has a V5? (caj1)

I thought that it was a 2.3 rated at 149 hp (150+ HP calls for higher insurance in most areas).
Re: Who has a V5? (vertigobora)

OK, looks like 2.3 V5 now produce 170 hp.
Re: Who has a V5? (vertigobora)

Does anyone have the actual VW spec list of the V5? I'd like to see what the internals are. I'm wondering if the crank is made of iron (a la 2.0) or made of steel (a la 1.8T and VR6). I'm wondering if it's boost worthy.
Re: Who has a V5? (vertigobora)

Just wanted to say Hi! I know this is a US site, but i was searching the net for VW sites and came across this. Just wanted to say that it is a great forum and thought i could help u out with this post.
I have recently taken delivery of a new model Bora (which is a Jetta I gather from this board!). It has the 2.3 V5 engine that u were discussing here. I can give u some technical detail about it, but first I just want to say what a great car it it. Its black with tan leather (a £1400 option!!!!) and the sports suspention. It cost me about £20000 which is about 28,000 US$, so u can see we really get ripped off here!!!
The engine is great, makes a really sporting sound and is more than powerful enough for my needs at the moment. Its 170 BHP with 4 valves per cylinder, 162 lb/ft torque at only 3200 rpm, does 140mph and 60 in aboout 9seconds. It is an amaizing car!!
ANyway, thats it from me, thanks for this site and enjoy ur VWs as much as i like mine!
James
By the way, I was wondering about the different models u have ove rthere. Are the diesels as popular there? Do u have the four wheel drive on the 2.8 204bhp model? I was just wondering because diesles are getting rerally popular here and i nearly went for the 130BHP TD, but decided on petrol in the end? I would be interested in ur views!!

Re: Who has a V5? (UKLad)

It's not a US-specific site, all sorts of non-USians are welcome here. Post us some pics we want to see how RHD looks like on VW's. 0-60 in 9 seconds? That's a little too slow.. I'd believe it's more like 0-60 in 7.9 or so seconds.
Re: Who has a V5? (strlen)

Even with the 2.0 liter engine I'm getting consistent 9 second 0-60s. VW underrates their cars horribly.
For example, Sport Compact Car rated the 190 HP Acura Integra Type-R at 165 HP at the wheels. The new Sentra Spec V which makes 180 claimed HP only pulls 141 hp at the wheels, a VERY OVERRATED CAR! The 2000 1.8T GTI? Claimed 150hp at the crank by VW. It turned 141.3 HP.
Re: Who has a V5? (UKLad)

Welcome to the site! Just because your in another country doesnt mean your not welcome! We love to hear fromyou guys. You guys have all the cool stuff we cant get

At least one inaccurate part is that the difference in displacement is due to the cylinder head. Displacement is pi multiplied by the square of half the bore (radius), multiplied by the stroke (height), multiplied by the number of cylinders. Basically, displacement is all in the block. Also, VW used 2144cc and 2226cc fives in the Quantum, and a 2461cc in the Eurovan. Audi used 2144cc, 2226cc, and 2309 normally aspirated fives, and 2144cc and 2226cc turbos (AFAIK).
