Who'd win?! '96 Jetta or '96 318TI 1/4 mile!!

Hey guys,
Please help me end an ongoing argument at work.
Person "A" has a '96 Jetta *VR6* with 5-SPEED, and simple bolt ons, no internal engine work.
Person "B" has a '96 318TI 4 Banger with an AUTOMATIC, again...simple bolt ons, no internal engine work.
Neither of these cars are chipped or using Nitrous.
BMW guy thinks he'll win because his car is more aerodynamic, and lighter.
VW guy thinks he'll win because he's got the V6, and a 5-SPEED.
But remember...VW = Front wheel drive. BMW = Rear wheel drive. (launch)
Obviously it depends on the driver as well, but who do you think would win based solely on the cars????

can't believe this is even an issue with these guys *rolleyes* The VR6 would kick his ass no problem......reckon he'd win even if the 318 had a 50 metre head start.

the 318 is not that fast of a car... it only has like 140 hp and weighs more than an mk3 jetta. It has rwd but thats not gonna make up for 40hp and a couple hundred pounds.

Put the 318 and a Jetta 2.0 up against each other on the street...
...they could race the 1/4 mile without even breaking any traffic laws.

Actually, my sister's boyfriend has a automatic 318 convertible. She beat him in her '96 1.8l Sentra.

I tried to get her to let me race him in my car, but she didn't want to embarass him any further. I drove that car; it was sloooow. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

I've driven a 318ti hatch with automatic. Its about as fast as your average
three legged horse with canine distemper.

I have driven a 318TI stick, its acceleration makes a then Corolla LE owner proud. 318TI auto could be fast if you drop it from 30th floor. BMW's 1.9L has no problem eating VR6's dust.

BWAHAHA! What arguement? I'd put good money on the VR6. 0-60 in around 7 seconds if I'm not mistaken.

1.9L 138hp arrives at 100 km/h at more than 10 seconds for stick, 11.5 sec for auto. LOL!!

The only way it'd be a fair match is if the VR6 guy swaps a 2.0
in that engine, and even so my money would be on the 2.0.
Now on an auto-X course, with all due respect to vee-dubs (I own one),
it's a much different story.

2.0 vs 1.9 would be a very close race. Mk4 probably has a slight edge in terms of torque since 1.9 is a dog in low-end acceleration. Automatic seems to be close but Bimmer stick would have an advantage on smoothness.

whohever had more money would win. you said no engine work, but you didn't say anything about suspension, chassis lightening, wheels, tires, nor the CONDITION of the engines themselves. no "internal" engine work eh? so what about performance ignitions, cold air intakes, custom tuned exhausts, lightweight brakes, etc.
whoever had more moeny would win because all that stuff comes with having lots of money to dump into your car.

I've never been out accelerated by a BMW four banger and I've got a ABA 2.0 Jetta.
