I have Kumho 770' 225 50 16 all of a sudden my tires are noticably louder that before. I believe when I had my oil changed that they also rotated my tires, would this be the cause of the loud noise? If so what the heck can be done if anything to solve this problem?? Thanks for any advice

it could also be that the rubber is getting more rigid with the colder temps. i know mine have gotten louder on turns and i havent done anything to them in months.

when you run tires for a long time, they wear a certain way depending on where they were on your car, and how you drive.
when you move those tires to different spots, the wear might turn out to be opposite of where the tire used to be -- now you're actually fighting the wear that you had previously.
i know when they went front -> back on my jetta, it took a while for it to quiet down (since i had run quite a few autocrosses on my stock tires)

Did they put too much air in them? If a tire is over inflated they sing! This is because the section of tire that should be flat against the road surface has too much pressure behind it and is bowing downward. This causes more tread noise on the pavement.

Re: Why all of a sudden are my tires louder than before? (srodgers)

okay so I think I have found the problem. I believe what happened is when I hadthe tires mounted earlier this summer they put the damn tires on backwards and the tread was facing the wrong way! I didn't even look or think about this at the time! when getting my oil changed They rotated my tires and when doing this they put the tires on the way they SHOULD have been facing, thus now I am getting the load noise due to the original wear of the tire in the WRONG direction!! I guess I am just going to have to deal with the noise untill the tread is back to the way it was intended!!! Ahh I am a little frustrated about this, but you live and learn!! I am read to put on my Winters any way and I am going to new wheels and rims next sumer!!!!!

1.8Tvermonter,
A couple of questions.
Do you rotate your tires on a regular basis? (every 6,000 miles)
Has the suspension alignment been checked? I would advise an alignment inspection once a year and it is a necessity if anything on the suspension is modified or adjusted.
The most likely cause of this noise is very common of FWD cars and is usually the result of a long interval between rotations or mis-alignment or a combo of both. The rear tires will cup or feather. This cupping can be felt if you run your hand along the tire tread from the front of the tire to the back. Compare this to the rear tires (which just came off the front) and I bet you will notice a big difference.
The noise you are hearing develops gradually over time but is not very noticeable until you put the cupped/feathered tires on the front. The added weight of the engine and the proximity of the tire to the driver make this noise very evident.
Your choices now are:
- live with the noise and hope the tires wear more evenly and the noise goes away.
- replace the tires, get an alignment and keep the tires rotated (a PITA but it prevents this condition)
Let me know how this works out and feel free to send me an IM if you have any questions.
