Mine are not red, and I only have one. If you got the technology package, its for the self dimming mirror. It senses when there is bright light behind you and dims itself. So in other works it could be a sensor.

this is not the sensor that points to the rear. i'm wondering if these are new for 2002. there's one red LED-type light on either side of the dimming switch on the under side of the mirror. they point straight down and cast a faint light on the area around the shifter. swmac, i bought the cable from escort when i got the detector and wired it to an empty fuse slot. very simple to do.

All the '02s that I've seen with self-dimming rearview mirrors (except Beetle GLXs that are finally coming with them) have these two small red lights shining down...I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that it is "mood lighting"

is this on the '02 GTi too...sounds interesting...
Re: why are there red lights underneath self-dimming rearview mirror? (GTi Dupp)

grrrrrrr! they just had to add this for 02 didn't they!!! its the same thing as in Audi A4/S4/A6/A8/etc, except those are in the sunroof control area... they are dim fiberoptics to slightly illuminate the radio/center consolearea... i am thinking about adding two LED's into my dome light(there is a FAQ on how to do this on Audiworld for the older A4s) to do the same purpose

yea i know what you're talking about ... i got them in my 2002 jetta glx ... its kinda cool imo, casts a nice red glow over the radio/climatronic area

I asked because I don't particularly like them. I don't like the way they reflect off of the wood cover on the ashtray. Has anyone covered them up? I'm thinking the rubbery poster tack might work. Any other suggestions?

swap your rearview for someone with an older one for cash and make the both of you happy.

it's just for ambient lighting like in the W8 console http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
