according to the owner's manual, when filling the gas tank, you should not add more gas after the pump automatically stops -- anyone know why?

because the gas needs expansion area and if you fillup more than when the pump stops the gas could thoretically cause more emissions and something else I don't remeber.
It's not like you can fit much more gas in, I don't get why people fill after the pump stops.

Adding gas after the pump stops wastes the gas you add. Can't remember why exactly.

I too thought the manual was full of crap. So I confidently pumped some more, just like I do for my 1989 Cavalier! Two seconds later gas came spewing out of the hole and down the car and onto my shoes.
THAT'S why.

Same here but my car was 5 days old and spilled all over the paint.

I have this same problem the last two fillups, and no my car was not running. The fuel gauge pointed to 3/4 tank and I only noticed it after pulling away from the station. Drove to work (20 miles) and filled it up again, guess what, I got 4 more gallons in!!!

Don't know what's going on, never happened before.

The fuel expands in hot weather, and this expansion needs somewhere into which to expand. If that area in already full of fuel, the fuel will spill out, wasting fuel and causing unnecessary environmental pollution.
