Why will it idle fine at start but shut off at stops once i drive?????

I don't GET IT!! I get in the car after adjustin the idle tonight thinkin it was to low, so i open it up a bit and its purring like a kitten for real. I'm lovin it, so i go for a drive to test my luck to see if i fixed the problem. The car drops to 2-300 now when i come to the first stop. Darnit!! Pull out run for about 2 miles opening him up to 5th, come to another stop sign and engage the clutch tach drops, drops and shuts off everytime the rest of the night when i came to a stop
What in the hell is the problem and how can i fix it? I turned the idle basically all the way open but it seems it can't hold an idle after gettin driven, or in my old digifant mk2 jetta i know that shut off when the idle stabilizer went bad but what goes bad in these that causes them not to hold an idle??
Please please help!!! It drives strong as hell, doesn't hesitate once he gets rollin but damnit come time to stop.....gotta start back up
BTW will the downpipe having a pretty extreme exhaust leak (and barely connected to the cat
) affect its idle or cause this problem? I don't think it would simply because when i first got it, it never did this till 2 weeks later, and it idles perfect at starts so what gives???
HELP!!

i seem to have a simialr problem. it's happened to me twice this week. it seems like when i haven't warmed the car all the way up to normal operating temperature and give it a little bit of hell, the idle adjustment screw vibrates itself in, and drops the idle speed to almost nothing. this afternoon, it was in so tight i had a hard time adjusting it with my fingers. i am also guessing that my idle adjustment screw should not be finger-tight. i am thinking of a way to secure it a little better, i.e., teflon tape or maybe a well-placed o-ring. i don't know waht all m akes up the idle screw though, and would hate to lose small parts in the snow. i'll get to it, though. soon enough. maybe a little blue loctite?

look again at the pic i posted for you and read the black print... I had the EXACT same problem when i lost the throttle plate stop screw. It had vibrated out somewhere on I-5 between Olympia and Portland. Imagine my surprise when i got off the freeway by my place and i had to compression start it on my way to the light. It runs when cold because the AAV is supplying enough air to keep the engine running...
edit: if you start the engine cold and let it just idle for about 5-10 minutes, it should die too... try it...

J - you haven't replaced that fuel filter yet? Take 15mins and put one on please!
Have you tried some fuel injector cleaner?
Have you gone over the basics? plugs, timing, mixture?
I think the Bentley manual goes over your scenario, not 100% sure though.

When you adjust the idle speed, how much resistance do you encounter on the screw? You should not be able to turn the screw with just your fingers.
My guess is that the rubber o-ring is toast. The easiest way I have found to fix this is to go to the dealer and buy a new idle speed screw complete with fresh new rubber o-ring.
Good luck,
fat biker
PS, you might also want to consider new injector o-rings, they also tend to dry out, causing vacuum leaks which have a negative effect on idle.

oh, i can totally adjust it with my fingers. and i have new injector o-rings, i just haven't put them in yet.
thanks,
lucas.
