I have an 83 GTI and wondering if this tank would fit the cab. If it will work with some modifications even that would be fine.

the rabbit tank is 20L (5 gallons) smaller than the cabriolet tank. so i don't see why it wouldn't fit???? why would you want to make it smaller?

it depends on whether or not your cabrio has has the "space saver" spare... if not, they'll be identical. If you do have the space saver in the cab, then you'll be adding a smaller tank...

I have a bad tank in the cab and my Rabbit is on its last leg so I'm trying to use as many parts as I can from the Rabbit before I junk it. Has anyone done this before first hand?

Yes, but as PDX said, if your cabby has the space saver spare(mid 85+) it will be a different(smaller) tank.
