Will leaving your mirror thing set to heater burn them out?

Someone awhile back on one of these posts said you should leave your power mirror switch switched to either left or right but not the middle heater setting because you'll burn out your heater. But I think I read in the mannual that the heater only kicks in if it's freezing out. Anybody know for sure?

yep, my salesman said to keep it on L or R to prevent it from burning out .. it's active whenever the switch is in the middle.

what year car did you have?

there was a discussion on this a couple of months ago. the 99.5 and early 2000 models had the defroster(mirrors and rear) on when it was turned to defroster. my 2001 the defroster(mirrors and rear) are off till i turn it on w/ the button in the console.
i leave the switch to the center position (the one marked defroster)

Feelin' hot, hot hot. It will burn out. It's not temperature sensitive.
Re: Will leaving your mirror thing set to heater burn them out? (hawc)

it will burn out if you leave it in the heat position.
Mine sits in L until I need it, then I flick it then wait a couple mine and turn it back off.
They are the best thing since sliced bread

I look at my driver manual, it only said that some model are using the defroster button in the center console to activate it, but it didn't tell what model and what my car is using. How can I tell.
My outside mirror heater might have been burned out already, I don't feel it when it turn on with the defroster button or left the power mirror switch to defroster.
If it is working, should I feel warm when I touch it?
Should I take it back to the dealer?? Will they fit it under warranty?

Okay, well if I get a GL, which has manual Mirrors, how are they wrked... by the defroster?

According to the manual, it only turns on when the defroster is turned on. It is not on all the time...that does not make any sense....
I was also told it is temp. sensitive...
Why would VW set it so it would be on all the time...

I have a 99.5 and the manual says that the heaters will only come on when you turn on the rear window defroster.

hmmm with mine, the mirrors will defrost even if I don't have the rear defroster on. I'll double check tomorrow morning though. I do however have to move the switch to the middle to get the heater to go on.
On a side note, my mirror switch was replaced and I have a new feature on mine. I can move it completly 180 degrees of where the heater symbol is and it has some picture and I have no idea what it does. Anyone know? I can't seem to find a use for it - but atleast it looks cool

Here's my understanding of the situation:

I just got my passenger's side mirror replaced, and I am waiting for the part to come in so I can get the driver's side replaced. The earlier MKIVs' mirrors are controlled by the knob on the door and supposedly the later models are controled by the defroster switch on the dash. I don't know exactly when the change took place, but my car is a 2000 built in 11/99 at Wolfsburg. The manual is misleading because it does say that the defroster switch on the dash controls the heated mirrors. My mirrors are being replaced under warranty. The replacement mirror works way better than the original one ever did - which is a bonus. Just out of curiosity, maybe we can figure out what build date is the point when they started working off the dash switch. I wonder if it makes a difference where the car was built? Have a good weekend people.

In mine I use the mirror heaters all the time WITHOUT the rear defroser. They will fog up slightly on wetish mornings so I'll flick the switch to clear them up.
I was told knob only for GLS / GLX
And Reardefroster button for the GL models.

omfg dont do it. i came back from a little road trip a few months back and almost cracked the mirror b/c it was so hot. i washed my car.

You shouldn't leave it on all night that's going to burn it out if it gets that hot!!!!!
And according to my dealer the mirror have the blue coating so they won't crack if they get hit with cold water when hot.

Agreed with others - the heater in the mirrors IS controlled by the Rear Defrost Switch, which turns itself off after a preset time. The knob for the mirror controls the mirror position only.

thats not true. I dont drive my car in winter so i never use the defrost switch. yet i dont think they work off the mirror switch either. i think its ignition controlled, so if the car is in position number 2 its on.

GRRR!!! ARGH!!! I never understood WHY my mirrors were heating in the summer! I can't believe that if you leave it in the "middle" setting, then the mirror heats up. That's a bad design!!! I hope I didn't burn out my mirrors! If I did, it's right back to the dealership with Betsy to get her fixed!!!
My poor Betsy...
