I posted this on the Passat forum but thought this may be a better place for it-
I am looking for winter tires for my '96 GLX and am running into problems. No one makes a 215/50-15 winter tire. I have gone on line and they have wheel packages with different size tires but the cost when all is said and done make it really hard for me to afford. Anyone have the stock rims with winter tires? What size tires do you have? I have a good size hill I contend with every day and there are times that good winter tires make the difference of getting to work or not.

Narrower is better for snows. As long as the over-all diameter of the wheels (tire + rim ) stays pretty much the same, the actual "size" does not matter that much. Get Hakka Qs.

They have Nokian NWR's in your size. A Hakka Q with less siping but still "mountain and snowflake" rated.

Thanks for the information! Looks like I will need to do a little research on what all the tire sizes/ widths are all about so I can get a good match for my car.

Here's your homework done. Get 195/50/15. not too narrow , not too wide.

Actually, 195/55-15 is the correct size. There are winter tires available in this size.

I was told by a Nokian dealer that 195/60-15 will fit my rims. I hope this size will work because I'm scheduled to have them mounted late next week. I just wish I could afford to put some steel wheels on also, but I just don't have the extra $$'s.

I sell 15" steelies for $36.00. 195/60's are a little tall but will work.
