definatly 18" for looks, but idk if 17s would be better for winter

why would you want to expose your nice wheels to the salt and gravel laid down during the winter?
is it really that important ?

I have issues..... I have somehow found a way to justify needing the 18's....Yes the 17's would be fine but my inner mod demon said the RS6's are a better idea.....

Technically, the best tire/wheel combo to run in the winter/snow is as small of a wheel as will clear your brakes with the most narrow tire you can get. I think that puts the MkV with a 16" wheels and a 205-55-16 tire.
On my Beetle, I am going with 17x7"wheel and 225-45-17 Nokians. I don't need the all-out snow traction because Metro NYC is usually plowed, so I will see more wet/icy roads than deep snow.
All that being said, if it were me with the MkV, I'd run the stock 17" wheels with a dedicated winter tire.

Snow tires make a huge difference when driving through slush (what most of us encounter most of the time) Go with the 16" wheels and snow tires - the 16" package from tirerack costs the same as a set of 17" snow tires alone!
