i never thought i would b able to say i put 400 miles to a tank full of gas, but i did it yesterday driving to dc and back. mostly all highway except for the stop and go traffic from the accident on 295 and the detour around dc, but whatever. the car made it home with like 401 on the trip odometer, now i just gotta hope theres enough to git me to the gas station, lol. btw, 91 gli 2L 16v w/ 2y tranny, so its not exactly the tallest of trannies.

I got 400 once. fairly stock 8V motor with a stock AUG tranny (similar to the 2Y with the exception of 2nd gear) Phoenix to LA non stop.
Of course now I'm lucky to get 275 a tank.

That's about a standard run in my Jetta. Of course, it's got a high ratio tranny.....
Re: woohoo 400 miles to a tank (1992jetta-2)

You sure about that? Are you talking highway km's or city? My diesel get's about 800 km's in the city pushing about 45-50 mpg.

Heh..I've done 398 once in my '86 GLI with a close-ratio 9A...One of those super busy work days when I was constantly on the go, kept thinking 'poop I need to get gas BAD' and then would brain-fart it.
Drove from Renton to Mill Creek (SeattleDubbers know how far this is) on fumes, put in 13.9 gallons! Bad news for your in-tank pump though.
Re: woohoo 400 miles to a tank (SeattleGLI)

i get about 250 miles per tank with my crossflow motor...does that sound normal?
Re: woohoo 400 miles to a tank (MyBlackGti)

i get about 290 in the city, 400 is pretty damn good. i'm jealous. gas here is like 1.24

I love it out here in New England. Gas is SO cheap compared to L.A.
I just got back from a trip up to Mass...right now the odometer is reading about 310 ish and I'm not in the red yet. 28 or so MPG make me a happy man, especially when I have discovered the joys of the Mass Pike. I ran into a Carrera and we caravaned quite quickly on the way up and same thing with an Audi 100cs on the way down. 400 miles on a tank though, that's huge. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
BTW
In no way am I saying i ran with the Porsche, but it certianly was fun when he was leading and smashed the gas...that thing took off

800 x 0.62 = 496 miles
It's a 1.8 8v
Unless Canadian Jettas got a bigger tank, this can't be right

Re: woohoo 400 miles to a tank (1987&2001Jettas)

I got 450 miles from a tank once on a trip from San Diego up I-5 heading to Oregon. Literally ran out of gas 200 feet from a Chevron station in Stockton, CA right off the I-5. Typical highway/city mix for me is about 350-360, but can make about 380 if I baby it.
Re: woohoo 400 miles to a tank (gti_matt)

i filled the car up tonight, and it was 12 something gallons, but i figured out the average right there (calculator on the nokia cellie) and it was 32.1 mpg. i have been seeing 28.5 for the last few months, but the extra almost 4mpg was prob due to the cruise control being set, and highway.

Eeeyeah. What is up with that? PDX is almost as bad.
It's damn cheap down South of here though, --I stopped in Woodland en route home last night and paid $1.18/gallon for Chevron regular unleaded. (When you're putting 30+ gallons in the truck, you go regular!)
Re: woohoo 400 miles to a tank (panic)

If you ran that 14.5 gallon tank bone dry, you got 27.58 mpg, and that is not very impressive. How much did you fill up ? Just divide miles driven by gallons filled.
I can get up to 570 miles out of a tank in the summer if I do all highway. That translates to 39mpg. This is on a worked 8v (0-60 in 7.4s). A modded car will be more efficient, so it will often use less gas on the freeway. Mk2's can be very fuel efficient. It is important that the OXS is workinig, along with a coolant temp sensor in good shape. Enough pressure in the tires and a light foot on the gas pedal. Wheel alignment can be extremely important too. I was getting 22mpg for a while and could not figure out why. Did a DIY alignment (very easy to do), and all of a sudden I was getting 36mpg again.
BTW, gas is heavy. A full tank weighs 86lbs. Tank up less and the car will be faster and fuel economy will improve, especially in city driving (less mass to accelerate).
