I was just curious if anyone here has had or has a muscle car, new or old.
I am searching for a new ride, and though I really want a corrado or a GTI 16v, I don't know if the are right for me.
I see alot of newer Camaros (1994-1998 is new to me
) and older Vettes (Mako bodystyle) that are in my range.
My general concerns matience, power, and handling. Comfort and uniqueness are also nice and looks mean little.
Can anyone comment on how good ole American muscle cars perform?
Thanks!
Natty
Re: Would any of you guys buy a muscle car? (Natty)
I've had or driven a couple old ones (I had a 69 Firebird that was fun). the old stuff suffers from bad brakes and mediocre suspensions (they came with rayon bias belt tires). I'd love a new Camaro. They'll be collectors items soon enough. Almost any Corvette would be a good platform for lots of mods. I think almost anything on the car can be upgraded with stuff from later models. Zoom. Zoom...

My dad has a 1969 Plymouth 'Cuda 440, but I don't think he'd give that up for the world.
Gotta love the sound of a classic American V-8 out the tailpipes! Just put it away for winter, and soon it will be going in for restoration (starting to show it's age
). The original engine is coming out and possibly a 500 cubic inch one is going in!

Well the real muscle cars were American mid-size cars from 1964-1972. But we'll talk about pony cars here too (Mustangs and Camaros). Both Camaros from 1982+ and Mustangs from 1979+ can be made to handle very well, they'll ride rough though. There are tons of aftermarket suspension components for both cars. Matience, well whenever you do have to fix something its going to be a LOT cheaper than VW parts. I'd say the 5.0 Mustang requires less maintence than the Chevrolet motors though. Power, well IMO imports usually cant compete in terms of sheer cheap power to American cars. If all you want is raw power, a 460 Ford or 454 Chevy will fit in either pony car from the 80s (big blocks in the 93+ Fbody dont work so well, neither do big blocks in the newer Mustangs). If the stock engine that you end up with isn't enough there are always swaps you can make. Lots of american motor are less tuned from the factory so they have lots of potential. Power is more a question of how much do you want, not how much can you get.
A lot of the 1973-1982 Corvettes were dog slow, of course you can put some killer motors in them, but stock they had no balls. Also the bodies are pretty worn by now in most cases. You can get LT1 Camaros pretty cheap now, its almost a shame how cheap I see some of them going
I saw a 1000+ hp late 80s Vette, they're still asking 20k for it. Street legal and it runs low 9s.
My personal expirence? Well I've had zero problems with my car other than a broken part of the side mirror adjuster. Mustangs tend to have stronger drivetrains than Fbodies, but less power stock, IMO.

Re: Would any of you guys buy a muscle car? (Crazyquik)
I'm not a very big fan of putting a huge engine in a car with a solid rear axle and 275mm tires. Get a Prelude, those are out of production in 2001 as well and will be collector's items, that is, they will last long enough for anyone willing to collect them to do so...
Maintenance and handling are a given. Power might need a little work, but the aftermarket can help you out a bunch there.
Re: Would any of you guys buy a muscle car? (Belfi)
my biggest automotive regret is when i was 19, and I bought a 74 Porsche 914...when for the same money I could have had a 68 Plymouth Road runner with a 383 and a 4 speed. Guess which one would still be in my driveway today?
Re: Would any of you guys buy a muscle car? (Snowdog)
Yep, I definitely would want a muscle car. Even if I'm a big car guy first, the sound of having a big block in a smaller car is always going to be tempting to the enthusiast.

Personally, I think a lot of AMC products- Ramber American, Classic, Rebel, Ambassador, Javelin, AMX- are seriously underrated even by American car enthusiasts. They are good, solid products and are as cool as anything else built in America at the time http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

When I was in the market for a beater, I was looking at Novas. You know, the really cool, old ones. We found an auto 2 speed with a 350. Not very fast, but damn what a smooth engine. Im sure you could squeeze a few more ponies outta that sucker.
Re: Would any of you guys buy a muscle car? (Natty)
Next to my Dubs my 68 Fairlane seems like a muscle car (302 V8). It's not exactly a Cuda, Firebird, etc. but it's still fun to go out and romp on. It seems like most V8s can be made to be pretty good performers. My friend has a 3/4 ton Chevy pick up with a 350, headers, Holly carb, some kinda special crossflow manifold or somethin', and that sucker can move pretty well. I'm thinking now is the time to put some miles on the Fairlane while gas is cheap (13 mpg) and before the snow hits.
