This may be stupid but oh well. Ive got an 84 scirocco 8v 1.8L standard engine. how hard or crazy or impossible would it be to put a 16v head on to it. saying i could get the intake, throttle body, and new cam gear. what else do i need or would this just be to hard to try. any advice would be great. thanks

This topic comes up from time to time so you might want to be a search. but to summarize in addition to the obvious, head ,manifold etc. you need 16v pistons as well. The general concenus is that it's easier, better and usually more cost effective to swap in a complete 16v engine rather then converts an 8v to 16v

Re: Would like some help in answering a question (ABA Scirocco)

just an opinion here...I would stay with 8v personnally. I think the 8v is a much better setup than a 16v. It will have ALMOST as much potential as a 16v but will still have low-end power.

Truth is that most problems and tricks wil come with the 16v head, so you are really not saving any headaches with not swapping the shortblock. The whole downpipe system will have to be changed, regardless of what shortblock you are using. So I would suggest you go with the long block swap.If you keep your eyes open you 'll find good deals on this very website pretty soon.
The difference between the shortblocks?
-special oil spraying jets on the rods
-cutouts for the valves on the tops of the pistons
-better stock oil-pump on the 16v, with a slighly different oil pan
-a couple other slight internal differences
My final opinion.Don't expect a big explosion from the swap. For city driving your Rabbit is actually gonna be slower, especially if you drop a 16v tranny in it too.As far as racing Hondas though it's gonna help you out.A lot of people have done it, but the truth is it's not a smart wap, because it costs as muchas your car is worth, and you'll get 30hp more on the 4000-7000 ranges.

If you can get the complete engine with wiring and injection components for like 500 bucks you should go for it.If you do it right you'll end up with a fast wabbit. But be ready to spend some more money on it in the future.

The head bolts right on. You'll need the intermediate shaft pulley, and the crank pulley, both off a 16v so you have the correct timing belt.
Then you'll have a fine looking boat anchor, unless you turbocharge it because your static compression ratio will be < than 8:1.

Also in building a motor if it is sixteen valve you are going to need 16 ss valves as opposed to 8, P+P's going to be more, 16 HD valve springs instead of 8, and two cams instead of one. If your building on a budget it is something to keep in mind.
