this may sound odd, but i've ALWAYS loved extremely pimptacular lowriders. i can never see myself owning one until i fill out "the stable" (one example of all the front-engined Porsches, and a racecar or two)... but i tempt to say that some day way in the future i'm gonna build a really badass lowrider. i'm such a car nut that pretty much anything with wheels, no matter how bad or good, is something i can say "yeah, i'd drive that".
no, not in 5 years, more like 10 or 15... something so BAD that it's good. something so tracky that you can't help but look at it and say "i dunno, it's so BAD it's GOOD. i'd put 4 18" subs in the back, get some hydraulics, chrome it to the max, 13" dayton wire wheels... the whole gamut. no, it would not be for the track (of course), or everyday, or to drive around in.. just a pure show car to once in a while drive it when i'm feeling goofy (my wife would say that's 24x7).
so, would YOU build a lowrider if you had a spare $30k and the money was no object. beyond all the dream cars, all the other big boys toys... money that was burning a hole in your pocket. you know, just to say you did it? i sure as heck would. just for laughs, and just to sit back and say "heh, it's so bad it's good."
of course there's a hundred other things I'd rather spend my cash on. I still think some day you'll see me in an orange Rolls Royce with aqua blue accents, gold wire 13" daytons, crushed purple velvet interior... gold chain steering wheel... and have nothing but 2 Live Crew and Dance Mania ghetto house music welded into the CD changer so the car could ONLY play some really bassy music. a plate that says "da balla". hellz yeah http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

would you? come on, admit it, they're so bad they're good. also, let's see some lowrider pics... both bad, and good.

There's too many cars I'd rather build first.. but one of them is along those lines. I'd love to build a pimp streetrod. Some old 40's coupe that's chopped, channeled and dropped to the max

Re: Would you build a lowrider? (rs4-380)

Too many other things I'd like to do to other cars first. But if someone gave me the money or dropped one in my lap? I'd have to say an older car for sure. I'm not into "pimp rods." My project would be something like a 57 Ford Fairlane Skyliner Hard-top convertible, or maybe a glass top of the same year. Maybe a '49 Merc chopped and channeled. Get the XK independant suspension swap with the inboard disc brakes, small block Ford V-8 (I'll never put a Chevy engine in a Ford), Richmond 6 speed tranny,............

Who knows, maybe if one day I had the space, time, and most importantly, $$$. Then again I think an Explorer Sport Trac with a set of Cobra R wheels on it and a few suspension goodies would be a fun "stuff" hauler.

Re: Would you build a lowrider? (alphaDUB)

I've built so many lowriders... None yet of the truly Mexican style, at least not for myself. But I've had dumped Monte Carlos, slammed mini trucks, VW Bugs & Squarebacks with 1 1/2" ground clearance or less, my seriously lowered Falcon:

I've got way too many ideas for things to do with them to really settle on one, though my '63 Comet convert will be close to exactly what I want in a lowrider, except using air ride instead of hydraulics:

As far as traditional lows go, my '62 Impala SS was as close as I've come, and probably as close as I'd want to come. No adjustible suspension, but only 2" of ground clearance at most. Light yellow with a white top and side trim inserts. The '62 is my favorite year Impala, followed by the '68-69 fastback (which I would love to have in black, dropped to the ground, on 20" billet street rod wheels).
But then I'd want to start building another street rod, like this one:

My wife wants me to build a lowrider from my '86 Caddy Fleetwood Brougham. To that end she already bought me leopard print fur for the headliner (which looks kind of cool installed already) and made some pillows from it for the back seat... This is the paint job she wants for it (it's white now... hey the car was a $500 beater to get us around...):

some big old Merc or BMW.... maybe an old Jaquar

my wife said she'd want to make a Candy Apple Red 1970 Mercedes 280SEL like the one we used to have. drop it low, blue velvet interior. something crazy and unusual for a lowrider.

hmm, well you can vote under "yes i would". laugh? heck no! i think it's totally original! part of the mystique of the lowrider is turning a car into a unique expression. they're not supposed to be 100% functional and practical for driving 365 days a year through salt, snow, mud, and hail... they're works of art.
the crushed velvet, odd colours, wire wheels, hydraulics, tint, chrome, and other items are ways of taking something ordinary and completely making it into a statement. the more gaudy the colours, the better! it's like wearing platform shoes, a leather trenchcoat, and a wide brimmed hat with a feather in it. clothes like that make a statement. they're not for jogging, or for racing, or for going to work in... they're for just going out on the town for a night of FUN!
we have some friends that are in their 40s and they have the original and official Playboy show-van. yes, THAT Playboy show van. it has the psychedelic naughahyde interior, chain steering wheel, CB radio, mini bar, bed, the whole sh-bang. it was on the show circuit back in the 1970s and it looks like something out of "Boogie Nights". everyone thinks it's the coolest damn thing on the block. they take it everywhere and it ALWAYS gets looks and a thumbs-up because it's original! a Rolls Royce or Mercedes low-rider would be P I M P. hydraulics would just take it to the next level. we'd probably dirve it like 2 times a year, and to shows, but hey, it would be way cool!
i'd love to do a lowrider. there's a lot of other things i'd do before it, but eventually, sure! you only live once.
let's see pics of the Geo!
