Re: Would you buy a non-quattro A4? (A4Jetta)

I don't know what it is with me, but I'd never consider a FWD Audi. I just don't see the point when there are such great RWD cars in the same price range.
Audi doesn't even offer FWD cars in Canada anymore as far as I know.

No... not that it's not still a great car w/out quattro, but quattro would be one of my number one reasons for ever buying an Audi. If I wanted another FWD I would just buy a VW.

Is it a 2.8 or a 1.8t? Money?? Mileage?

Personally, yes. FWD with traction control is great in the snow unless you have some major hills where you live. I was shopping for a FWD A4 as my last car, but wound up with my 525 instead. As for the tradeoff in performance of FWD vs. AWD, eh...I'd take a RWD car if I wanted performance (in fact I did).

I was surprised that it even existed. I have not seen one in sometime. It is a 2001, green, black cloth sport seats, 17" sport package, zenon, bose, 5 spd with 21,000km on it (apparently a VW Canada car) and the asking price is $31,900 CDN, I figure new it was probably about 37-38,000.

The only good reason to buy a non-quattro Audi is if the car in question is delivered only as 2wd. My Cabrio is a good example of that. If it was available as quattro, I'd sure as hell get one.

I wouldn't buy it. Sure, you might be able to survive snowy conditions just like every other schmuck in a FWD car, but you sure as hell wouldn't be able to chase snowmobilers through a snow covered golf course.

We have two FWD A4s in my family. The other 3 Audis we have owned have also been FWD. Somehow, we have managed to survive Canadian winters without quattro just fine. Frankly, we have never been in a situation when we needed it. The only real advantage of quattro is in it's resale value.

FWD = lighter weight, better fuel economy and less expensive repairs (if the problem is related to tranny). Nothing wrong with FWD if you're not in a snow zone.

No, and it has absolutely nothing to do with winter driving.
Like Volkscience said, if I wanted FWD, I would buy another VW.
The Quattro's handling characteristics are worth the expense to me.
