WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI

What the hell is this tom foolery. What's the point of offering the lowest price possible for the drivers edition if the dealers are simply going to gouge the public. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif Hello regular GTI 1.8T.

Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (Sappa)

VW dealer in Santa Clara down El camino. The people working there didnt know shiit. The sales dude was like "yeah the new turbo s bug is more fun to drive than a new 911." Riiiiight.

fyi-
when i put my deposit down at a boston dealer, the sales guy wrote in next to price (left blank) "not to exceed msrp"...time to find another dealer....
Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (Speed_Racer)

I drove the Beetle Turbo last weekend and didn't think much of it. Nice but nothing compared to the Golf with the 180bhp 1.8T.
Just a question of finding a reputable dealer I suppose.

Call another dealer. If you really want this car you will travel a distance to get it.

You've got to be kidding me! Where do you live in New York? I'm out on Long Island. I hope this isn't the case w/ dealers out there, but why do I think it will be?

Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (GTI ONE DAY)

My post was perhaps a little misleading - I used to live in New Mexico and I have a contact in a dealership in Arizona.
I figure that, due to interest and population density, the north east DE's are going to be spoken for very quickly. So, I'm going back to visit family in NM and driving my car back across country - an excellent orientation I feel!

I know that I'm #1 on the list over there as well - which is nice.
I live in Pomona btw - so I'm NYC metro.

Even at this "late date" -- there are 3 area dealers that refuse to take deposits and 1 that took a deposit -- although I am the only person on the list. Any dealer that sells a car at over MSRP is not looking to keep your business. They've admitted that they're whores. Any buyer who pays over MSRP is a damn fool....even for a "supposed" limited production run car. Really, no matter how nice -- it's a Volkswagen - not a Ferrari.
FYI -- All the dealers I spoke with said MSRP and not a penny more.

Good point. Very good point.
Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (GTI ONE DAY)

price gouging is a poor business conduct, i seriously doubt any VW dealership will practice this. just my $0.02.
Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (hafa_adai)

My local VW/Audi dealer has a $1900 markup on EVERY CAR! VW or Audi. I'd never buy from them even if they gave me a $500 over invoice deal because of this.
Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (JLucchio)

I forgot to mention that every other GTI on the lot had a $2000 mark up because "thats what they are sellin for in california."
Time to find another dealer.

Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (Speed_Racer)

Yup, find one. If people realized that if NO ONE payed over sticker for the car, then the dealers wouldn't do it. But there are enough dumb people out there who have too much money and not enough brains that buy it anyway. Look everyone, NO ONE SHOULD PAY A CENT OVER STICKER!!!! If you do then you're just making it worse. Don't do it and then the dealers will have no choice but to stop. [email protected]#KERS. I swear. When I was looking at S2ks, one dealer wanted $46k for the car. $14k over sticker? I think not...
Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (lamfalus)

I went to that same dealership in santa clara (it's about 3 minutes away from my house) to test drive a turbo gti, and they knew nothing, nothing at all... i asked them about the 25y GTi and the 24v VR6 and they looked at me as if i was making them up... this disappoints me...

Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (Speed_Racer)

If there are going to be 1,000 DE's available here, I am pretty sure that there won't be 1,000 customers at first. Heck, even the "waiting list" on here is not at 500 people yet and I doubt more than 60% (if that) of the people on that list will actually buy it. Let the dealer's try to mark it up. Most buyers will see it as a very expensive stripped GTI and will not buy it. I predict that three months after they come out you will be able to get one at less than MSRP.
Also, with the almost certain release of the similar 20th Anniversary GTI (with more possible color combinations and options???) will the DE GTI really be the collector's item that many might think it to be?
I am not trying to put down the DE in any way (heck, if I could live without a sunroof I might want it), but I certainly don't think it would be worth paying over MSRP (for this or any car).
Disclaimer: This is just my opinion, so don't flame me for it!

Re: WTF: Local dealer wants $10k over msrp for a "special edition" GTI (VeeDubDriver)

Thank you VeeDubDriver and lamfalus for reasonable posts. There's no reason to believe the hype. I'm one of those "waiting list" people, and I'm not sure I want a car w/o a sunroof either. Also, if I could wait a year (I already suckered myself into waiting a year for the 24V VR6--and now look what I'm thinking of buying), which I refuse to do, I would wait for the 20th anniv. version. Plus, I'm not crazy about buying a car sight unseen, or even price undecided. Patience.

I think you're taking the smart approach. I was waiting for the 24V VR6 too -- and I'd love for it to be offered in the 20th anniversary car. The D.E. hype has me thinking I might be happy with the 1.8T...and I might (but I know I'd prefer a 6). I think the 20th anniversary ought to be "loaded" and "top-of-the-line". I don't want to hear that crap about saving weight. These are FWD VWs -- they're fun, practical cars -- they're not race cars no matter what some may want to believe. Make me a sporty car that can go, stop, and handle, and make it with all the nice features that modern cars should have. If VW cheaps out -- there are always other options.
I'm keeping my deposit in on the D.E. just in case VW scraps the 20th anniversary thing altogether. I'd much rather have the D.E. than a standard GTI. If you're a total gearhead race track guy, then you might prefer a lightweight stripper model(although you'd still be better off with a RWD car anyway). If you're like most people and you like the GTI because it's sporty, fun, practical, and affordable -- then you really don't care about an extra 100-300 lbs. Give me my creature comforts - especially on a Anniversary Edition car.
If Porsche can offer a sunroof on a 911 (996 - whatever)-- then VW should offer one on a lowly GTI. It's NOT a big performance/weight issue. It's excluded for either manufacturing convenience or cost reasons...and that sucks.

My sentiments are echoed by VeeDubDrivers post.
If I were in the market for a DE, but didn't want to wait (or get gouged), I'd probably do this...
