Yearly changes

Hi all. I was just wondering how you can determine what year a Passat is. What did they change each year? I know that for 1999 the corner llights went from orange to clear and there were some new wheels. What were the changes for 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003?

These are not all the changes, but here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:
- 1998 Passats had 100% amber corners & side markers
- Some 1999 Passats w/ alloy wheels had alloy spares while others had steel spares. All alloy wheel-equipped Passats afterwards came with steel spares.
- 1998 Passats only have 2 headrests in the back
- In 2000 Passats, the trunk release was moved from the glove compartment to the driver door
- The middle seat in the backseat of a 1998 Passat pulls down to become an armrest. 1999 Passats do not do this. 2001.5+ Passats returned to the middle armrest design of 1998.
- 1998 and 1999 Passat GLX's came with 15" Adelaides. In 2000 and 2001, Passat GLX's came with 16" Montreals.
- 1998's Royal Green was replaced by Bright Green in 1999.
- Several other colors were only available in 1998

Basically, to the naked eye, I believe there are 3 noticeably different fifth-generation Passats: the 1998 first model year version, the 1999-2001 version, and the 2001.5-2003 version. A slightly modified fifth-generation Passat will arrive for the 2004 model year.
