I just typed up a reply to a post and i thought i was rambling on off topic, so i thought to start a new post.
My first time was 14. By that time, the 84's were already 6 yrs old. Ive always loved vws but never really was 'into it'. It was at my family's gas station and chatted with the customer. Asked him the usual q's :year, make model, and i vividly remember asking the mileage, and he said 300,00kms. Original owner. It was black w/red interior. Mint. I fell in love at that point, and never sat in one until i was 18. But soon realized what all the fuss was about.
What made u fall in love/dig with the Mk1?

Re: Your First Time...... (kryptonkal)

I first bought a bucket of shiit '79 mk-1 white 4 spd after driving my buddies '86 mk-2, which seemed like lightning compared to my '66 rambler station wagon, and even with crappy tires it handled snow and beat all sorts of way better cars it was just amazing. aside form a mk-2 16v jetta, i have been driving a mk-1 of some flavour for 5 or 6 years now. the handling is just so predictable, and it is so easy to work on and there is just so much aftermarket support, they look cool, they are light and efficient, fuel injected and engines are plug and play in a way that very few manufacturers have duplicated. it is so easy to make the car a reflection of your tastes, and everyone underestimates the potential of your car plus, just like my samurai when you see some one in a similar vehicle you ussually get a wave http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

my first time was on the beach butt neked. oops... this is about vw's. to tell you the truth, i always thought the rabbits were kind of funny looking when i was a kid. not to mention they had a funny name. in fact, they were made fun of quite often. if only those people could see the rabbits today with vr6's and g60's...

Re: Your First Time...... (kryptonkal)

My parents old 83 MKI Jetta. They had it until 93-94 when they sold it to my uncle. That my Quantum I remember a lot about. I remember a lot of it and thats what got me to like VW's when I was a kid. I always remember that big trunk that the Jetta had and the lack of should seat belts for the rear seats. I think thats why I have always pefered Jettas over Golfs/Rabbits. I also knew about Sciroccos back then to but only the MKII body style. I never the knew that there was an MKI before. I've only seen 3 total MKI Sciroccos. I thought one was a Jetta hatchback or something. My dad had one, but I never saw it. I remember almost all the A1's I've seen in my life execpt the Cabriolets since I've seen to many of them. Pretty sad isn't it.

Re: Your First Time...... (Aw614)

My first VW was a 75 Rabbit that I inherited from my brother. He's had some problems with the stock carb and had it replaced with a Weber of some sort. It revved really nicely but was not blazing fast. It also leaked water into the interior pretty badly. This was back in '83. It wasn't cool. I sold it and bought an MGB GT.
My 1st Scirocco, a '78, is really what got me hooked on VWs.

my first vw was a 63 vw bug I was 12 and I started driving when I was 11, I lived in mexico at that time and driving license was not a big requirement as having a 20 pesos bill in the glove compartement... after that I had about 20 different vw bugs, a few rabbits, a scirocco, all kind of jettas including diesels, turbodiesels, gas, gt's gti's, audis, corrado, a couple of porsches, all german vehicles, except for my family car which is a new expedition. oh and a few renaults not german, french but european anyway

Re: Your First Time...... (4thScirocco)

Got a ride in this girl's 2 year old '84 GTI. I was impressed w/ the overall package and got one the following year. I first got hooked when friend got a brand new '75 Scirocco when we were in HS. Loved Mk I Scirocco ever since.

Re: Your First Time...... (Mk1Racer)

And that was when Bill became Dr. Miller, a doctorate in Hare Medicine, and he has never looked back since.

My first drive was a brand new '84 GTI at the dealership. Really wanted that red GTI but the dealer refused to negotiate on the price so I walked away. Have regreted that decision ever since as I would probably still have that red GTI. But the '78 race Wabbit fills my need for speed, and I don't mind modifying it. Cheeers, WWR.

Re: Your First Time...... (WackyWabbitRacer)

Well, I learned driving a standard on a 91 VW Jetta D and vowed to own a VW...
After being involved in a horrific rollover accident that I managed to walk away from completely unmarked, I was rather low on funds, as I recieved nothing whatsoever from the Insurance company for the vehicle and the thousands I had invested in it...(No Collision)
I have always loved VW, my Father is a Sales Manager at a VW Dealership...so it was practical for me to buy a VW. I got a smokin deal on an 84 Jetta GLI. 2 door, silver, with sunroof, Sub 180,000km...ahhh, such a nice car...All my friends drive Hondas and junk, and have no respect fo the Volks...(Honda Owners are like none other, thats all I have to say about that. Honda owners always seem in competition with one another, but VW's like a family almost, where everyone compliments and helps you out...) Anyways...I bought her back in february, and shes been a bute ever since...
I have so much planned it will be so much fun!

thanks for the compliments, the turbo is taking so long that shawn at momentum makes fun of me pretty much every time i go by. however i am just taking my time and learning about turbo's and seeing what mkrad and jwatts are doing at SNS tuning so that i can keep my digifant g-60 injection and not have to go programable http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
hopefully it will be done this year but i would not count on it, it will likely be a collection of expensive parts for awhile longer.
I just sold my mtb today so that money is ear marked for a quaife

and i am trying to figure out what to do with that massive inter cooler air water and 30" of intercooler piping or air to air and atleast twice that? hmmm gotta think about that one. i will keep posting pics to keep you updated, and if your ever out this way.... feel free to drop by http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Your First Time...... (kryptonkal)

The first modified watercooled vw I recollect was a small bumper 16V GTI with Momo Quasars around 1988 or 89 when I was in juniour high. That was actually the first modified modern sport compact I had ever seen - at the time my big brother had a crazy Datsun 510 that I thought was the coolest thing ever but I can still picture that GTI.
My first VW and the one that got me hooked was a 77 Dasher that I had in highschool. I beat the poop out of that thing and couldn't kill it. The passenger door didn't open, the fan was on a toggle switch that I always forgot to flip, the interior smelled like dead fish, it was 5+ different colors, the brakes would go out randomly, and it was an auto. It sold me on the belief that your volkswagen will fall apart all around you and be an absolute piece of poop but it will never die.

Re: Your First Time...... (melmer)

First VW I ever drove was my mom's 86 scirocco, when I was 16. I didn't buy my first VW a 84 GTI until I was 17. I thought it would be cool to drive a Jeep CJ7, but after 6 months the thing literally fell apart. I worked a part time job for a month saved up $600 a quarter what I bought the CJ for and bought the GTI, It wasn't in too bad of shape just need brakes and tires all around. I still got it but it's pretty sad today, I will be parting it out in Sept.

Re: Your First Time...... (1badMKIrocco)

Thanks for the responses guys. When i read the posts, i kinda figured that most of them would originate from some experience with em when u were younger. From what i get, most m1/mk2 guys love vw's and love to work on them and put in their own time. Not to say that the mk3/mk4 guys arent vw enthusiasts, its just that i believe alot of it started from us, then we "graduate" to other platforms, but still retain our roots.
My summer classes are done in a couple of weeks and i expect to put some tlc into my car, so i should post some pics of her.
Nigel: faaaaaaaaaaaat ic. LOL...is that a Mack truck ic? it should fit
I might be heading up that way on my time off. If i am, maybe i can swing by. I would love to pop bymomentum too. Im tired of just reading about it.

Re: Your First Time...... (BennyGLI)

Oh yeah...Benny. Ive seen your gli (i think) when u first bought it. It was parked at fifth avenue service area. I drove by one the weekend and i was taking a look at it. Its in good shape. Maybe you have seen my car around. Its looks like a gli, has gli badges(factory), got the black gli plastic piece behind the license plate, and like a mix of orange and mars red. Its actually a wolfsburg edition with the funky checkered pattern interior. I have a twin that is a gli that is parked on memorial drive sw, close to the pathways. Looks identical to mine, roof rack and all. Anyways, nice car. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
