Watch Dirt Every Day Play in the Mud with a Vanagon Share Comments It’s Friday, so point your screen away from prying eyes and take some time to watch Motor Trend’s Fred Williams prep a 1989 Volkswagen Vanagon for some off-road hooning. The set up is pretty simple: A Vanagon races an F100 through the mud. Williams first heads to a Vanagon mecca where he buys a… running model and sets out to get it ready for some off-roading. His budget doesn’t allow him to buy a four wheel drive model nor to modify it into a 4WD model, so instead he buys a lift kit and some aggressive tires. It’s a surefire recipe for success. Except that he loses—the fix was in from the beginning. Williams didn’t really want to win, and neither should he have. The race is more about having a good time with a buddy. And he does. What the video does make clear is that this thing is a bucket of fun. There are times when Williams can’t help but giggle, and the “1-wheel-drive” van, as he calls it, performs well. It never gets stuck, it “jumps like an elephant with big ears,” and the host clearly has affection for it by the end of the day. The video proves that with only light modifications, just about any Volkswagen will happily go anywhere.
