This DIY is given without any warranty. I am not responsible for any damages to your vehicle or to you that might have resulted while working on your car. Use this DIY merely as a guide!

Required:

  1. Replacement Crankshaft Position Sensor from your favorite car parts store (Stock Part# is 06A 906 433 L)
  2. Ratchet with 6 inch extension bar and 10mm socket
  3. Pliers
  4. Cool engine
  5. Being careful to not to break your brittle dipstick tube like I did.

Step 1 (Remove Engine Cover):

  1. Remove the 10mm nut and pull up on the front of the engine cover to pull it off.
  2. Set engine cover and nut aside.

Step 2 (Remove bolt holding in the Crankshaft Position Sensor):

  1. The bolt can be removed without taking out the oil filter; however the sensor almost sits right behind it.
  2. Using the ratchet with 3 inch extension and 10mm socket, loosen and remove the bolt and set aside.
  3. Use pliers to twist the sensor until it pops out of its hole.

(Image Notes: The sensor can be found coming in behind and to the right of the oil filter in this direction.)

Step 3 (Move the two grey plastic clips forward/out of the metal harness):

  1. Being careful not to break your dipstick tube, slide the grey plastic clip that is attached to the Crankshaft Position Sensor forward and out of the "L" shaped metal harness. Note: This makes it possible to unclip the cable that connects down to the sensor.

Step 4 (Install new CPS, reassemble all parts and tighten things back the way they came out)

06A-906-433- crankshaft speed sensor variants

Be sure to get the right sensor. The MkIV's are a fit nightmare with the different 2.0L engines.Don't believe anybody's fit list. Open the hood and see if you have a 6 inch or an 18 inch wire on the sensor.

06A-906-433-L has a 140mm cable (Standard Motor Products #PC525)
06A-906-433-C has a 490mm cable (Standard Motor Products #PC502)

There's gobs of these on eBay at a fraction of the dealer price.

So I changed the CPS and still nothing. I will see about the MAF. Even when unplugging the MAF I get no spark. The car HAS been sitting for a year without starting.

Changed plugs
Gas is flowing and added additives and fresh fuel
Changed CPS to new one
New Starter(Old one fried) new one smokes a lot (yikes)

Right now I'm at loss. No burnt fuses anywhere.

Know this is a, well ancient post, but Ephry, did you ever get your VW that was sitting for a year cranked up? I am in the somewhat same position, though i am getting spark, at least 12v to the ignition coils and brand new coils and plugs. I tried cranking without the MAF plugged up but got the same crank scenario. I hadnt tested 12v to the fuel pump, though i swear i hear it come to life when putting ignition to On. I have a new pump coming in tmrw and am putting a new MAF and Crankshaft sensor. I am not getting any codes when pulling from the OBD port, though i am in the process of making sure all cables are connected to the OBD port properly. I am able to connect to the ECU with the adapter and programs i use for OBD codes and monitoring.

Just wanted to see if there was some other gotcha you found with your situation as it seems my mk4 1.8t is in the same situation, somewhat at least with sit time, that you could possibly share. Tried to send a DM but couldnt find the option to do so if it is even there with this forum.

I started this job today trying to replace the crank position sensor on my mk4 golf 2.0 looks like possibly someone was in there before me bc the head of the bolt is totally rounded and the inside isn't much better. I have a extractor socket set which I was able to get on there but I would like to have a nice new replacement bolt in hand before I go ahead and pull the sensor / bolt out and make the car un-moveable.

Does anyone know the part number for the crank position sensor bolt for a mk4 golf 2.0?

Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

It's either N90945002 or N01470213, which appears to be an M6 x 15mm socket cap screw.

It's #9 in this diagram:
Awesome thank you! I have an errand to run near the VW dealership tomorrow so I'm going to swing by there and see what the parts guy has to say about it. Of the two that you linked N90945002 with the flange looks the closest to what I have in my engine block.
