this, rather furiously.

a Jetta with a liftback PHEV or EV would be fantastic. an eGolf Sportwagen would be the thing of dreams.

an ID.4, no. Or anything in their current lineup, really.
Hence why I bought a Chevy Bolt. It's very close to the same size as a Golf (sits a little higher due to the battery underneath, but that's a non-issue) and that is perfect for my use case.

The slow fast-charging hasn't been an issue. Pick a charging spot that's also lunch/coffee/dinner. All the highway service centers around here have all that.

If I could have bought a Cupra Born, I probably would have. Failing that, if GM had built an RS version of the Bolt as a kinda-sorta GTI competitor, with sport seats and better tires and better suspension, even if the range were a few percent less, I would have bought that. But the car works nicely enough as-is.

I don't have a problem with the Golf being an EV, but I'd prefer it to resemble a Golf and retain some of the things I like about VW. I'm not a fan of the styling we've gotten with the ID line.
So a bad water pump and electrical gremlins? I bet they can do that.

News that should shock (see what I did there?) no one:

well that is excellent.

I definitely would have loved a rwd entry-level electric car, but yeah the golf is just such a good bodystyle; I'm glad they'd be ditching the ID prefix and odd looks for a more conventional shape and name. Keep it simple.

...ya know, just the buttons tho would be good.

There is no indication in that article whether the next-generation electric-only Golf would be front-drive, rear-drive, all-wheel-drive, or some combination depending upon trim level, nor that it would look like the illustration for the article.

The ID.2 is front-drive only, and will only ever be front-drive, unless they do a redesign of the floor pan and sacrifice some trunk room. It's designed around twist-beam rear suspension in order to maximise space efficiency. If VW plans to offer "hot" versions of the Golf that include all-wheel-drive (which the current lineup does) then the platform will have to protect space for both the front and rear drivetrains ... and that means lesser versions could be front-drive or rear-drive.

I basically see this mk9 eGolf to be the ID2 we won't get; a larger version of a basic EV. Not a bad thing by any means, but I'm pretty sure it'll be FWD.

I could be wrong!

VW id.2all dimensions are reported as 4050mm long, 2600mm wheelbase. That's very close in both cases to the current Polo. It's about 200mm shorter than a Mk7 Golf. I suspect the actual electric-only Mk9 Golf is going to be a next-size-bigger vehicle.

If VW opts to bring the ID.2 in some form to Canada in the 2028 timeframe, then I'm probably in no matter what they call it a Golf or a Polo or an ID something ... I would have bought a Chevy Bolt RS with sportier seats and suspension had GM provided the option to do so, but that's a missed opportunity on their part ...

if it's cheap enough, I might just do the electric Volkswagen Golf/Polo/ID.beepboop myself.
I was looking for a longer backseat, but man do I love having small cars.
