My girlfriend is very interested in buying a tC, but she has one nagging concern. How difficult is it to get a baby seat in and out of the back seat? It doesn't matter if it's somewhat inconvenient, but if it's a total PITA, we might take a closer look at Civic sedans. We don't have access to a child seat to try it out ourselves, but I can trust the opinions of people who have done it.
Sorry for the new thread, but search is down, and I'd like to find out before the end of the weekend.

If its an infant seat that unhooks from the base, and lifts out with a handle then it shouldnt be an issue. I did it for 2 years. The best option though is definately a 4 door. Maybe a jetta instead.
Im refering to 2 years exp with a civic. Easy because the seat slides forward and the back folds down when you want it to go down. Dont know about the scion.

Re: (nilocs)

My wife owns a TC and we frequently babysit our 2 infant niece & nephew. While the legroom is exceptional for an adult, retrieving a child from a baby seat can be fairly difficult. I would say it is better than 90% of 2 door sports coupes. That being said, if you have kids or plan on having them I would definantly not go with this car.
My wife has already said that if we are having kids she is going with an xB. Of course at first I said no way would I ever own one those, but after looking at 1) The pricng 2) The utility of it, getting to a car seat is great b/c it is 4 doors & because it sits up a little higher than your typical sedan, I decided that it would be a viable alternative

Art Vandelay: Sorry, I can't be of more help, but are you, by an chance, an architect?

If not I would at least venture a guess that he is a Seinfeld fan

Re: Scion tC question (Art Vandelay)

Is there enough room between the back of the front seats and the rear seats for a rear facing baby seat? That seems to be the problem with most smallish cars- if you have that type of baby seat.

How does she feel about the ION Coupe with those cool doors?

Just a note- the ION 3 coupe now has a stand alone option for the 2.4 170hp engine (or also part of an 'enhanced sport package' that gives sport suspenion, abs, traction control, and a lower axle ratio. (that is a lot for a 1k option). (shrug) It may be worth a look.

You might also check out a new Focus ZX5. It really is a great package for such a short car. It manages to look sporty even with four real doors.

If she does decide to go for a 4-door...I'd recommend looking at the Ford Fusion (base MSRP of $17,795):

We looked at a Fusion, but she prefers smaller cars. We went to a huge dealership and they don't even have a manual tranny to test drive, and don't plan to bring one in unless you're buying it. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
Any other input from coupe drivers with kids? For what it's worth, we're young, active people so it's not like we're a couple of fatties who can't contort our way back there. There's no plan for kids in the near future anyway, she's just thinking ahead.

When I test drove the tC I found rear seat access to be VERY good. I am not a father though, and have zero intentions on becoming one, so I cannot comment on the child seat issues.
THat said, if there are no immediate plans for kids, just buy what you like. It will hold its value if the time comes to sell.

What about a Mazda3? They're good little cars with an impressive standard features list, including a 6spd manual tranny. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

6 speed?

Since when?

Typo / wishful thinking.

It is indeed a 5 speed.

That's what I thought.

And on a side note- there are still several 05 RX-8s left on Mazda dealer lots. Current incentives total to $2500, and the invoice with destination for a base 6 speed is $25,400. So you should be able to get one for $23k easy.

But I am not sure the back seats are deep enough for a rear facing baby seat.
