I have been asking around locally and it would seem that the '99-'02 150hp 1.8T A4 Jetta's only get around 26-27 mpg on average with mixed driving but mostly hwy. The last 180hp cars probably get the same I would imagine but I am not in the market for one that new so I never really asked. Anyway I just can't deal with that low of mileage. I need at least 30 on average.
So this leads me to my question. I noticed that the gear ratio's for the TDI trans is the same car are much taller which would lead to lower RPM's and therefore better MPG. If I did the math right at 60mph the rev's would drop around 600 rpm and I am sure that is close to 2 mpg on the hwy. So that would put the 1.8T around 30 mpg on average right where I would like it.
So is it possible to swap the TDI trans into a 1.8T just the get the taller gear ratio's?
