G60 oil type help plz!!

is 10W30 too light for a G60 engine

14°to 50°F (-10°to 10°C) 20W-20
Above 14°F (-10°C) 20W-40, 20W-50

Above 5°F (-15°C) 1993 15W-40, 15W-50, 20W-40, 20W-50
-4°to 60°F(-20°to 15°C), 1990-93 10W-30, 10W40

There are so many threads on this. Apparently because of how our heads flow from the factory, thicker oil is required to maintain the correct pressure at all points in the engine. Unless you are in a colder climate/ winter, I believe the recommended weight is 15w 40 or 15w 50. I am running 15w 40.

Nothing thinner than 10-40 (unless you are in Canada or similar climates in the winter) or 20-50 in hotter climates for the G60. Nothing else! 15w or 20w for startup is usually better for any 8v and even 16v VWs. Nothing thinner than 40W unless heavy winter. I have rebuilt enough 4cyl VWs to know what works long term and what is too hard on rod bearings, etc, so take my advise fwiw.


Sure, you may get slightly better gas mileage with 30w, but at what cost?
