2021+ Arteon MIB3 Navigation Database Updates available for download?

I posted a message in the Tiguan area (didn't see any discussion about it here) concerning our very buggy navigation system. In that post, I have provided the link to navigation database updates and attached a PDF of instructions on how to go about updating the navigation database in North American Region VWs with MIB3. The procedure involves downloading the newest file from VW and putting it on a flash drive. You then connect that flash drive to one of the USB-C ports in the center console. As I stated in that message post, I was not able to update my system. It may be that I already have the latest version. My version is 20.2 (Setup >> System Information >> Navigation database). Does anyone else have anything newer?

Here is a link to that post: 2021 VW Tiguan MIB3 Maps Q

OK. It could be that the version available for download is older than both your current version and mine. I found embedded in several of the CFG files of the download:

"ReleaseVersion": "21WK09"
"ReleaseDate": "2021.02.15"

I couldn't find a number corresponding to 20.2 or 20.7. I'm curious as to why your nav database might be as many as five versions newer than mine.

Do you have the Car-Net Mobile Hotspot? — Perhaps it downloaded updates over the air.
Do you have the Car-Net "Plus Nav" package? — Perhaps this is necessary to auto-update the nav.
When did you purchase your car? — I got mine in June, but it had been sitting on the lot for a little over 6 months, so the nav database was probably loaded at the factory sometime in late 2020. I doubt that either the port or the dealer would install any updates.

Also, what is the software version of your MIB3? Mine just came back from the dealer, where they updated it from 0786 to 0805.

The "Discover Media Gen.3 (MIB) Map material update" PDF that I attached to my above referenced post in the Tiguan area states, "The version status is specified in the format 'YY.MM'. For example, if the status of the map material is from March 2020, the format '20.03' is displayed." So I guess that means that my map database is from February 2020 and yours is from July 2020. Both of ours should be updating to version 21.2 using the file that is currently available for download... if that file is indeed for our vehicles.

They may, but mine just came back from the dealer about a week ago with a complaint about the navigation. They updated the infotainment software version, but did not update the navigation database. Had I known then that there is an apparently newer version (20.7) floating about than what I have (20.2), I would have asked specifically about it. Seeing as they had my car for two full days just to do a software update and little else, I'm not anxious to take it back there again anytime soon.

I went to this site: Volkswagen Navigation System Updates | Volkswagen Car Care

I followed the detailed instructions. I must say it is a little confusing as they say use NTFS but then later they say exFAT or NTFS for the file system. I tried exFAT and nothing happened after multiple times of starting engine for 45 mins at a time and few long drives. I tried again using NTFS and put it into my Arteon (2021 SEL-r-p). Forgot about it for a few days. After a 90 mins drive I checked the DB and it was updated!

I had 20.7 and I now show 21.9

So, use NTFS. Extract the tar file into a folder on the thumb drive. Insert the drive into one of your USB-C slots. You need to have the engine on or be driving for 30 to 45 mins. After, lock your car and check back 10 mins later. There will be no notification of any kind. You do not have to initiate the update. You'll either see the Navigation DB change or not and that is the only way you'll know if it worked.

According to the instructions you need to do this 4 times for all of the USA to be updated. I think it says 6 times for USA, Canada, Mexico, and Bahamas.

I suggest you just leave it in your USB-C slot for a while if you can. My understanding is that if you turn the engine off before a module is transferred it will resume the transfer the next time you start the engine.

Yes, there is an update button in settings when you look at system information, but, if you press it the map update does not show, so, you can't select it. I believe the details in the pdf from the site I referenced state there is no confirmation of any kind as well.

It stinks that you don't know if an update is occurring or not.

So, either this worked or I got an OTA update without knowing 😀

Half the problem is that exFAT doesn’t support a large file system, that’s why we converted to NTFS. Plus, if you guys aren’t aware, the TAR file is used by Linux, which is what 99% of our vehicle computer systems run on.
I’ll try to run the update this week using a USB stick formatted to Linux’s file system and see if that helps.

So guys, one thing I noticed. In the How-to PDF, when they show the tar being extracted, there's a .ROOT folder in there as well, that looks like it has a lot of stuff in it. You can see that below:

But, when I download the file and then open in (in WinRar or 7Zip), I'm not seeing that folder at all. Mine just starts with the 16601 folder and I don't have this .ROOT folder. Wondering if that's why the update isn't working for us.

Good catch. However I also tried this with a Mac just in case with the same result. So it leads me to believe that folder was only for older builds. Also there are a few people that were able to get this to work. At this point I'm done with it since I don't use it ever since I have android auto. However if someone does figure it out, I'll def get it upgraded.

I feel like I need to apologize for getting anybody excited about updating your nav DB in 2021+ Arteons. When I submitted my post I assumed that my efforts to download, extract, and update were the reason I moved from version 20.7 to 21.9. Nobody seems to have been successful following my steps.
I checked my system SW versions last weekend for something else and was SHOCKED that my nav DB now shows 21.11. I didn't have a USB drive in the car and I don't know if the download site has a newer version than what was available from my earlier post.
Then it occurred to me that my previous success with nav DB update coincided with me paying for Plus Nav in the car-net app. I like the navigation in the car more than google maps although I use both.
Anyway, I now have newer maps. I never received any notification (hate that) but my maps are updated again.
Since I didn't try this manually I am getting OTA updates. I hope it's not just because I am paying for Plus Nav since OTA was promised to us with MIB3 but I figured I would let you know.

This past weekend my maps were updated to 22.1 ...

My guess is we don't. Like everything else in the US compared to the RoW, you have to pay for it to get it. It was no different when we had to pay almost 200 for a new SD card to update where the RoW just had to go to a website and download their region.

So just for giggles, I did purchase Nav Premium and a wireless hotspot plan last night. This morning, for the first time, my navigation database was upgraded. It’s definitely being gated by a paywall.

I wouldn’t mind so much if OTA updates were available for the infotainment, but so far, nothing.

I’m still torn about trading my car, and this makes me a little agitated knowing to maintain Nav updates I need to keep paying monthly.

I just checked my Car Net app after reading your response. I still show the Plus Nav option under Plans. Of course that means I also pay $10 a month to have the car added to my existing Verizon account to have it share my data plan. I believe I received an email from VW a week ago stating: Convenient Software Updates for Your Vehicle Coming Soon

Don't know if these will require an active data plan or not but I would think many will be upset if it is required

I believe you need to subscribe to Plus-Nav to get updates. I now have 22.2. I posted this previously:

Ah, I missed that. Thank again for the details on your map update saga. I too was expecting map updates to be done OTA. I mainly use Waze for my navigation needs, but it would be really nice to have the updated map database. Hopefully they'll fix the downloadable map update one of these days.

So I decided to give the maps an update in my Arteon and Tig. Signed up for the wifi/nav premium in both vehicles. The maps updated within hours on the Tig. It's been days with the Arteon and still on 20.7. Is there any way to force these updates?

I called Carnet. Got a lot of the normal BS. You connection looks fine, blah blah. They told me to contact my dealer and have them take a look. I called my dealer and my SM said there's nothing they can do for it. I wanted to pay for a month of this and then cancel the service just to get the upgraded maps. Looks like I'll have to wait this out.

Hey guys, I'm based in EU (Portugal to be more specific) and I was able to make an update through a Pendrive.
I've downloaded the latest map version, I don't have Internet access on my car neither we connect plus. After inserting the pen drive I drove for a few miles and most likely have pressed the update software button available on the menu. Somehow it found the update and did it (it did show the update on the screen with a small progress bar on the top left).
