Braden,
Not sure where you have come to that conclusion but it's not accurate.
On the Highline+ vehicles with the full red MFD, the 9w3 will work.
The only 9W3 that works with the red MFD system is the "B" version [1Z0 035 729 B].
When the 9W3 is equipped with the RNS-510 navigation system, the 9w3 allows for the phone book to be displayed on the Nav unit for dialing from the touchscreen.
When the 9W3 is equipped with the RCD-510 touchscreen radio, the 9w3 does not display the phone book over the radio display as the North American units cannot do this.
Important to Note: The 9W7 unit does in fact work on cars with the red MFD to full functionality with the RNS-510 Nav Unit [may require firmware/software upgrade], but it will not display any information on the red MFD due to the DDP protocol being incompatible with the BAP. Many owners don't concern themselves with this as the full features of the 9W7 bluetooth works just fine via the RNS-510 touchscreen display and can be accessed. These features include changing tracks via radio, title and song info, A2DP, text 2 speech, and phone book access. The MFSW still retains functionality with the unit for answering and dropping calls as well as normal radio functions.
