HELP!!! Messed with the "green menu"... don't know how to get back

Yup I screwed up. I promise I will never mess with the green menu again!!!

I have some options in the MMI (TPMS reset, wiper service position, etc) that are no longer accesible since messing with the green menu. Forgot what i did and didnt write down what I did. Is there a way to reset ECM's back to factory? Or is this a VagCom thing? If Vagcom, is there a list of factory settings available somewhere? Need some help please!

#2 ·
This topic comes up occasionally on the various forums; I haven't seen anyone yet offer guidance to a relatively simple "factory reset", probably since one doesn't exist for this platform.

Personally, I have a collection of SD1 screenshots (using [TEL]+[MEDIA]) of various GEM configuration screens that I might adjust, just in case. Unfortunately, it seems all to easy to turn off various functions due to (1) lack of adequate end-user (or even developer) documentation and (2) cryptic naming conventions for many configuration parameters.

You might consider running the firmware update on your system in user-defined mode so everything in flash memory is essentially overwritten from the SD media. This might get you back to a more-or-less standard configuration. --g

@drrochet : See my post linked in #4, above. You have a 3G+ system, so you can install firmware HN+_US_AU3G_K0942_6. I also have a PDF that describes firmware & nav database updates here: mmi3gp-updating-20211127.pdf
Thinking some more about this, I'm not so sure the firmware update will affect this, as the Green Engineering Menu (GEM) settings appear to reside in so-called persistent flash memory that doesn't get touched by the update. Still, updating your firmware to K0942_6 is a useful exercise. I'm thinking it might be worth posting a reference collection of working/valid GEM PNG screen shots (using [TEL]+[MEDIA]). I have a few of these from our 2014 A4q that I can post in a new thread here later today that might offer some guidance.

BTW, your navigation data looks to be from the factory: see my post HERE about updating this to NAR 2020. --g

Man you are a God send. Thank you for all your help. I will be doing the updates this week and will take those screen shots for you. I have saved the green menus you have posted. I saw in your signature that you have a 2014 A4. Are you saying that both your A4 and my Q5 share the same green menu selections? Or are there platform specific selections that I should stay away from?

#9 ·
@drrochet : GEM settings are, in general, based on the platform & installed equipment. So, for example, in /car/carcodingvehicle, I wouldn't expect the same settings for an A4 & a Q5. In most of the others, however, I would expect settings to be similar based on installed equipment/options. Use these as a guide -- and keep a blank FAT32 SD card in SD slot 1 so you can grab screens using [TEL]+[MEDIA] before making any changes (the PNG files will have the date/time stamp in the file name). HTH --g

#10 ·
Awesome. I will take all screenshots before I do anything of the entire GEM. Would it be ok if I post em here / PM you the images to see if you can diagnose where I went wrong... or is that too big an ask? Be honest!

#11 ·
@drrochet : Post your GEM images with unusual settings here for the record. I haven't seen much discussion about the topic of GEM settings, in general. This gets something out there for the interweb search engines. --g

Do you have (or have access to) a Ross-Tech VCDS cable ?

One, I'd be concerned about all those DTCs registered in /dtc.

Two, look at this post at AudiWorld: MMI Green Menu Settings for 2014 Q7 TDI - AudiWorld Forums

He seems to have corrected his issues by updating the coding on some modules (though he doesn't say which modules need to be recoded).

My quick look at your GEM /car entries doesn't suggest anything unusual (that would cause these functions to be disabled in the MMI). --g

I just got the RossTech Cable in the mail. Will be looking to get into the VCDS this week. Side note, after doing the Firmware update, I no longer had access to the green menu. Is there a button sequence to reactivate it or do I have to go through VCDS to do so?

#19 ·
The GEM is usually activated by an adaptation to address 5F (MMI main unit J784), which updates some database settings in persistent flash memory on the unit. The database settings can be updated with an SD script, too: Nice script for accessing green screen on 2015 MMI 3G+ - AudiWorld Forums

BTW, have you tried to run a "factory" reset from the MMI Setup menu (MENU > MMI Settings > Factory default settings) ? I came across a thread that suggested this restored menus after an erroneous GEM settting or two (but didn't bookmark it).

A speaking of VCDS, you might find this thread interesting/useful: Complete VCDS - Vagcom mod list

So I hooked up the VCDS to it and tried running some of the check sand diagnostics… As expected nothing changed nor was I able to find the issues at hand. I will check in with Ross Tech to see if they have any inclination regarding the specific issues I am having. Followed the links to the posts you sent me and even just activating the clock functions didn’t work (using the GEM)…. Would love someone with a clean Q5 to post their GEM settings as a benchmark!!!!

@drrochet : Did you get this figured out ? Someone on AudiWorld just figured out this has to do with the /car/carprotcollswitch menu: Green Menu help - AudiWorld Forums
But should also be visible in the Long Coding helper of Address 5F in VCDS (see long coding byte references to menu settings here: MMI 3G+ J794 Coding and Adaptations ) --g
Hey bud, been a while. Big thanks for those links. I am just now getting back around to seeing if I can restore the values on the Q5. I will try that /car/carprotocollswitch option tonight before getting into the longcoding process. I have been reading up on using the VCDS with the long coding feature to attempt to properly set the values for the features that have been affected. This video (
) is one that has at least given me some direction with that. You are awesome. Thanks for following up. I'd buy you a drink if I could!🥃

@drrochet : In Address 5F, your Byte 08 is set to 0x43, which sets bits 0 (Menu Central Locking), 1 (Menu Compass), and 6 (Menu Seat Memory Front). You have Address 3C: Lane Change (J769), so I would expect bit 4 (Menu Lane Change assist) to be set, also. DTC 03157 is likely related to this misconfiguration (or other recent configuration updates made on or about 24 May). See: Audi Map 2017 6.24.2 8R0051884ED 8R0060884ED
Our A4Q has Byte 08 set to 0x45: bits 0 (Central Locking), 2 (Drive Select), and 6 (Seat Memory Front). Make sure when you set a menu bit in the long coding that you have the related hardware installed.

DTC 03276 is related usually to user-initiated software updates in the Red Engineering Menu. Did you updated the MMI software recently to K0942_6 ? DTC 03276 is cleared with Adaptation Channel 15. The DTC at Address 19 was due to low starter battery voltage (11.6V). --g

@DrGER cheers!!! I will look into the issues in 5F with your recommendations. I did your MMI firmware upgrade so I will also go through the Adaptation settings and give it a once through. Thanks for the directions!

A little off topic but... since I have your attention I will ask. I have a 2018 S5 that seems to be getting transmission stuck in S mode, even when not in S mode. Idles at 900 in Auto, Comfort, even Dynamic Normal. Transmission wont manually or automatically shift out of 7th gear below 60 mph. It is an intermittent issue, but noticing it more now that is is getting real hot here in South Florida. I've done some reading into and some people are doing some type of TCU reset and having mixed results. Any experience with this? Any remedy through VCDS? Worth taking it to Audi for eval? I have an extended on it so repairs are manageable... figure any less time I can leave it with them, the better. Thanks bud.

Good luck with getting your MMI back on-line fully -- sounds like you're making headway there.

As for transmissions, we only drive MTs in our house (last AT was in 1991?). The B8/Q5 forums over at Audizine are fairly knowledgeable. You might post your TCU question over there -- I would suppose the TCU has an adaptation for that kind of thing, but if it's intermittent, that might suggest mechatronics? But no DTCs from your TCU, above, at least. The extended warranty definitely helps. --g
