Re: How to install resistor to bypass the driver airbag (newtomejetta)

How about using an ohm meter and just checking the resistance on the airbag itself then match it up with the correct resistor |
Holy SHTT! You dont want to do that!
an ohm meter sends a voltage/current accross the leads so when you hook up to a resistor, it can calculate the ammount of current lost in the circuit.
this could very well detonate the airbag.
I dont know how much voltage Your ohmmeter uses to operate, but I wouldnt go anywhere near it.
I had a airbag light come on one of my golfs, and when I scanned it with my home made obd2 tool, the code said that the airbag in the passenger SEAT, had a 'squib resistance too low" or high, I forget wich. there was no way in hell I was going to pay 2500$ to replace a faulty airbag in the friggin SEAT, so I decided to bypass the airbag altogether.
B1999 Passenger Sid, Side mount Airbag Low resistance on Squib
B1935 Air Bag Passenger Inflator Circuit Resistance Low on Squib
solution? I followed the advice of people who put ricarro racing seats into MK4's that would normally have airbags in them, but racing seats do not.
to bypass the seat airbag I used a 4.7ohm resistor, .25 watt.
you can get a hundred of them for about 1.50$ from digikey, or mouser. let me get a part number and link here....
ahh, here we go, my actual order of these things. .05$ each. lol.

I have heard mention that the problem is likely in the connectors themselves and not the airbag. but I didnt have the time to tear it all apart in the dead of winter, and used the resistor instead.
I took the resistor, and stuffed it into the plug that I disconnected from the seat. it wasnt a tight fit, so I bent the wires up a little to encourage a more aggressive contact in there. then I cleared the code, and drove to the inspection station to get a sticker
good luck!
