Weird behavior and even weirder codes... "was this limp mode"?

While accelerating out of the apex of a flyover onto the tollway in 5th approaching WOT (and the speed limit), when I shifted to 6th the car shook once, the EPC light came on, and I could no longer shift, accelerate, or maintain speed. No blinking, no yellow engine light that I can recall.

Pulling off on the side of the tollway the car was running like someone tore off several vacuum lines (very rough idle, shaking). Shutdown and restart and the problem was gone.

When I got home I pulled the following codes, which I have never seen before:

Any clues on what the hell happened to my car today?

For what it's worth, I've had another incident occur two or three times when at the top of 1st near redline before shifting to 2nd, where the car cuts all power and snaps me into my seatbelt (could be related).

I think there has been mention of accelereating in higher gears, no matter of tune or not, that this situation has happened. I'm sure you will get some good info on this by the end of the day.

Thanks Vegas. When I searched by the problem description the lead that came up most was overboost/boost spike on shift from 5->6, but the codes don't seem to reflect that. Searching by the codes yielded next to nothing.

This same thing happened to me a couple times when I first went stage 1. Now recently I did a catless downpipe and catback. I have been running them for like 2 weeks with no problems (except a CEL for the cat). Now last night my car went in limp mode twice while out driving. Got home and pulled the codes and had basically the same codes as you. Being that my car threw the same codes before the downpipe I don't think they're related, but I am now again very interested in what can cause this.

This is a known issue to APR

Mk7 R, APR Stage 1, VWR R600 Intake, GFB DV+

Basically the same set of codes (though my initial code was an inconsistent signal from the ECU, then the cam codes) has been happening to me. I've had my R tuned since July 3 without a problem. But about a month ago now, as soon as we had our first cool morning in Northern Virginia, I dumped into limp mode while accelerating hard to pass someone. This issue is something that I have been able to repeat multiple times. It is apparently a known "overboost" issue on the APR Stage 1 tune.

The circumstances when this triggers have all been very nearly identical:
Air temperature around 70 degrees, mildly humid, car at running temperature, going a steady rate of speed between 45-55 mph. I step on the gas, maybe 3/4 throttle to pass or something. I get maybe about 2-3 seconds of good acceleration and boost. Then the car dumps itself into limp mode with a rough idle. I pull over, shut the car off, restart it, and it's normal again.

What NGP Racing in Lorton, VA (who did my tune) said is that APR is receiving matching reports with these symptoms from a number of Mk7 R and S3 owners under hard acceleration at speed. They have been looking into the prtoblem, but had not been able to reproduce the problem themselves while recording data I was told.

Three Mondays back, I went in to NGP, they hooked up APR's logging system, and I was able to dump the car for them while they were logging. NGP sent the log to APR engineering, who is apparently still reviewing to determine a permanent solution.

In the meanwhile, NGP said a temporary solution is that they can reflash my R to the low output Stage 1 tune instead of the high output, and that should eliminate the issue. That said, I told them I would keep the car as is in case they need me to try to reproduce again for them for additional data.

I will try to remember to check back in and follow up once I hear from NGP and APR about a permanent fix/reflash.

Checking back in. Still no solution from APR, but according to NGP, I am far from the only one reporting this issue to them (as mentioned previously). Here's hoping the permanent solution is pending soon.

And a question @cantgetenoughmk7r: You say that you re not having any issues with the Stage 2 tune? Just curious, as I m starting to feel like that may just be my "solution" to this problem.

I also received the same codes yesterday, going into limp mode. I was on a highway going up a large bridge doing around 90mph. I went to make a pass and floored it in 5th gear. About 2 seconds after hitting boost the car goes into limp mode. By the time I got to the top of the bridge, I was doing 30mph, and coasted down to the bottom. Cars travel at a very high rate of speed on this road, and there is no shoulder, so unfortunately I did not feel safe stopping to reset, especially since it was night time.

Shut the car off, and back on, and everything was back to normal. Waiting for a second response from APR. The initial response I received suggested that my spark plugs may have gone bad......

I hope they can sort this out with an update soon.

I hope you guys with APR get this figured out. I've had GIAC stage 1 since the day it was released in the states and fortunately I have not hit limp mode once.

Thanks, I'm sure it will get squared away quickly. I never expect everything to be perfect, and they will always learn things with a new engine (since there were some differences with the US spec R vs EU).

This is my 3rd 2.0T with APR software, and I'll continue to be a customer of theirs for years to come.

I went searching for this as its been happening on my car and to my surprise came across this thread. Getting the P11A6 in my S3, seems to happen under same situation as others (usually highway speed, give it some gas 3/4-full throttle and after 2-3 seconds it throws itself into limp mode, especially in 5th gear). My P3 gauge isn't showing overboost, but it could certainly be happening. Not really sure what the issue is. Note I'm on UM stage 2 with a down pipe. I know when I first went stage 2 it was doing this, but that as due to lag spikes. However, I wasn't getting that fault code. Hoping to hear some updates about this soon!

Eurodyne 1.5 tuned. Similar limp mode occurrence. Eurodyne was not very helpful and blamed it on my car, not the tune.

Limp mode occurs when going full throttle from 80 mph when traveling up an incline. At about 100mph it goes into limp mode exactly as op described. It has not happened on the highway on relative flat roads, but I don't commonly floor my car on the highway when already going 80mph, so it may.

Any word back from APR on the reflash availability?

This has happened to me about 5 times now, always at the worst possible time (merging into high speed traffic, or heading up an on-ramp onto a tollway that doesn't have another exit for several miles). I'm about ready to dump APR's stage 1 and go back to stock before it gets me killed... It's a damn shame, my wife's Mk6 GTI has been on APR Stage 1 software for 3 years without a single issue.

The most recent thing I've heard from APR (through my tuner) on December 11 was:

"Justin replied: Benji, Calibration is still working on that revision for the Golf R and S3 cars that are running into EPC issues. They’ve made several changes already and we’re getting there. Thanks, Justin, Solution Provider"

I'm sure the flash update got de-prioritized during the Holiday new product rush, since they actually make money selling those vs developing the re-flash. Here's hoping it will get some priority again now. Lord knows, I am sick and tired of waiting.

I read on another thread (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...40742-APR-Presents-the-North-American-MK7-Golf-R-amp-MK3-S3-ECU-Upgrade!/page39) and checked with my local APR dealer (NGP Racing in Virginia). Apparently APR quietly released an upgraded v2 for the Stage 1 Golf R/S3 tune that I'm told is the long-awaited limp mode fix. I'll be making an appointment for a re-flash as soon as I can. About damned time! I'll let you all know if I learn more (e.g., if it's just the limp mode fix as I read or includes other changes).

EPC FaultS 2016 Golf-R Mark 7: APR Stage 1

EPC Fault: (Limp mode = loss of power)

10/24/2016 between 4:30 & 5:15pm

Traveling about 96 mph - location 33 miles out of Melbourne on I95:

• Traveling at ~80mph when Accelerator died . I think there was some vibration….
• Power steering ok
• AC OK
• EPC error on console. Light on solid
• Water temp at 200F. No oil temp warning light or else.
• Cruised to stop off shoulder in grass
• Smelled something burning/burnt but could have been the grass

• ~20 minutes later engine started on first attempt. Made calls for towing but cancelled when car started.
• No EPC light
• Drove remaining 33 miles tentatively while eventually up to 65 mph without any issues
• Visual Inspection looks fine.
• Car appears to be normal now

VW Dealer - Can't reproduce problem. Pertinent codes are P11A600 (Cam Shift Actuator Cyl# 2) and P060C00 (Internal Control Module Main Processor)

APR Support - Please have your ECU updated to the newer v2.3 Stage 1 file. This will prevent that error from occurring again
