Back in November - I had the timing chain service done by a local shop. I usually am into supporting local and had a shop do it because I didn't (and still don't) have the time, space, or tools. Recently, I started noticing an oil spot in my car port where I park and after looking in the engine bay, oil all over the place to include the alternator, passenger side frame rail, and engine mount. After a long internal debate I decided to drop the GTI off at the dealer to get it taken care of. I suspect that when I had them check the timing, they bent the lower timing cover which as we all know does not make for a good seal to the timing chains. Regardless, I told the dealer that I just want the car back to 100% - including the ECM flash that was a recall that is still open on the car. Hopefully I hear back from them sometime today but am anticipating it being a week before I get my car back. The kicker is that what I paid the shop plus what I am going to pay for this repair is equal to what I would have paid in the first place if I just went to the dealer. Live and learn.

I will try to post some pics later.

So I stopped by the dealership after work. Really great atmosphere and professional team there. There is clearly a massive oil leak originating from multiple places. One of the first things they discovered was that whoever did the oil change last (the shop I took it to in November) replaced the oil drain plug with a copper washer instead of a crush washer, which apparently is a no-no. That was one source of the leak. Additionally, it appears the upper timing cover is also leaking, so bad so they cannot determine yet if the lower timing cover is also leaking. Great… we’ll at least they can use the surakarta belt that I bought from autozone to replace the oil soaked one in there now. That’ll save me about $20. Woohoo!

They are also getting a quote for me for the exhaust. I have not been a big fan of the APR test pipe with the borla Y-pipe… so we’ll see how that goes. I still have the integrated engineering downpipe and to be honest I prefer the sound of the stock muffler with an aftermarket downpipe.

Anyways, here is a photo of my putting more oil in it last night in preparation for this mornings 50 minute drive into town:

Installed the CTS Turbo TOP and now getting a CEL for the MAF. Not sure if its because it was tuned before I installed the TOP - I don't remember having this issue on my last MkVI although I did install the TOP before getting tuned.

Edit: Realizing I had not updated since I picked up the GTI early from the dealer on Friday afternoon. So far the repair to the upper timing chain cover looks good. No leaks that I could tell. I spent a few hours cleaning the area that had been covered in oil and cleaning up the rest of the engine degreaser that the dealership used. I haven't noticed any new oil residue however I did notice a lot of fluid coming from the alternator. My assumption is (and I hate assuming) that the fluid is being flung from the rotor part of the alternator to where the heat escapes - which led me to believe the CEL that I took it back for this morning was being caused by the alternator. Got a call from the dealer saying it was actually a MAF code that was being called out. I guess I did not check the codes correctly with my VAGCOM yesterday... More to follow this afternoon.

Ok, so I have a theory about the MAF CEL:

I believe that since I installed the TOP, there is greater airflow through the turbo on the outlet side which means it might be pulling in a greater volume of air, i am thinking in terms of flux... The MAF just needs to recalibrate to this greater airflow and over time will go away after such calibration occurs. This is just a theory but I will post the results after about 500 miles or so. I think I might be right.

Ok, so I turned the MAF "right side up"...no change. After doing so more reading I believe my next step is to double check the hose clamps on the TOP I installed. From what I read, P01011 can also be caused by a boost leak.

Either way, if that clears the code, I am going to turn the MAF back the way I had it because its just cleaner.

IF this fixes my issue, I am going to move on to replacing the Alternator. It is literally flinging oil and crap around in the engine bay and I fear the pulleys have oil caked on them too so my intention is to clean those off...somehow.

I came across this thread and I am vested in your build. Will be following along to see where the oil leaks are coming from.

Question: the title says "got no keys". Did I miss something, did you buy this at auction with no keys and have to swap out cylinders on ignition and doors? What did you do about alarm?

Welcome. I believe the oil is coming from the bottom of the lower timing chain cover. I did some testing yesterday and blew my DV (it made a loud pop under load) so after work today I am going to be replacing that and inspecting it for a potential oil leak.

I also suspect the crank pulley to be a source of the leak but I may not have this car long enough to really find out if that is the case...considering trading it in at the moment.

Title is from a song called "Yes Indeed" by Drake - no connection to how I acquired the car.

Got under the car on Thursday - the noise I heard while testing on Wednesday was actually the sound of the stock TOP coming "unattached" to the intercooler at the bottom of the pipe (the clip was not secured all the way. No major damage that I can tell but I will be able to find out for sure after I get the replacement DV sensor, I broke the clip while installing the DV+ (whoops).

As it stands right now, I have the DV+ installed with a Revision D DV (It had a Rev C in there) and the CTS Turbo TOP installed. Once I get that new DV sensor in I am hoping the CEL goes away and I am back to just one problem - Oil coming out of the crank seal. Will do more testing and update later this week.

Got the new DV Sensor install yesterday. The GTI pulled nicely with no high pitched whine under load which I attribute to the DV+ and TOP. I did however still have a check engine light but I am less concerned about it at this time. When I got home after taking it for a spin, there was oil everywhere on the passenger side. I still think it is coming from the crank seal so...I ordered a new lower timing chain cover and all necessary tools and hardware to install it. I am also taking this time to install the Fluidampr pulley AND 034motorsport Engine and Transmission mounts. I am going full bore on this car and there is no stopping now.

I emailed Deutsche Auto Parts asking if I can remove the lower timing chain cover without removing the upper and they said I can! That is what I intend to do however I am open to any insight that others may have on this job. The reason why I don't want to do the upper is I just paid the local VW dealership to do it and I don't want to undo their work.

I also have a new alternator ready to go in so I may do that before hand however while I am waiting on parts to come in I may spend this weekend enclosing my car port.

Since the weekend, the weather here has gotten a lot nicer. I received the go ahead from my landlord to turn my carport into a garage and that has been my focus for the last few days. Tools and parts are trickling in for my lower timing chain cover job. I intend on having one of the walls complete by Friday and then intend on taking care of the timing chain cover on Sunday. Right now the carport has two open sides so I only have to build one full wall (with door and window) and frame out where a garage door would be installed which I will probably hire out. I have been wanting to do this project for a long time and I am excited to be taking care of it now.

I believe this was the culprit of the oil getting flung all over the engine bay. No indication it was tightened to spec by the shop I took it to for the timing chains. The sharpie mark is mine. I was able to get it to 110ft-lbs and after a few hours of struggling to get it to +90 degrees I folded and bought my first impact wrench. That helped. I’ll need it soon when I put the fluidampr pulley on. I have not noticed any more oil after the fix and a short test drive.

More to follow.
