Custom VR6 Turbo Setup?

Alright guys recently I've become tired of my 12v, and ive been itching for some more power.
And as most vr6 owners know FI is the only way to really get some decent power out of these motors.....
Before I had a 240sx with an sr20 swap and it would always put a grin on my face and was fast enough for my daily pleasure.
In JDM world turbo setups are very different, people would use an array of different parts and turbos to experiment. But after spending the last year here on the tex mk4's dont really seem to be as inventive. Everyone use's the same company and just buys a 4-5k kit and just slaps it on.
So my questions is who has custom VR6 Turbo setups?
What did you guys need to set them up and how hard was it? Details would be nice......

Buck the trend...Try contacting Schimmel or maybe 034 motorsports. They should make you happy with enough

Thats what I mean, I know folks with honda's that have turbo setups worth less 3k. And they have quality parts that last for thousands of miles. I dont want to have someone else gather all the parts if i can do it myself for cheaper.

I mean its true that honda stuff is cheaper, but jdm guys know how to scrounge for parts. Especially stuff like turbos, a fuel system stuff. I mean its fairly easy for jdm guys to go turbo. Turbo, fuel injectors, fuel management and piping/intercooler, and a nice exhaust manifold.

*pssst* it's easier than you think! just transfer over their modding "style" and apply it to vw's. make your own kit

I'm not trying to argue, but I'm not sure what your point is? Stuff for us just isn't that cheap. Like DSM, change out the stock turbo on the car with a bigger factory unit and it cost them 300 bucks, not that way for us. Its our luck and part of the love I suppose.

DSM's arent fair thats like coming to a fist fight with a gun. They can go fast for super cheap, like you said all they need is a bigger turbo and bigger injectors and they're set. What im trying to say is that why cant dubs do the same things for just as cheap. The only part i can really see being expensive for turboing a vr6 is the manifold.

That and you can fit a truck in the engine bay.

I had an '01 GTI VRT and a custom setup as opposed to the kit setup is cheaper for how much horsepower you'll get along with reliability. Having a lot of tools and mechanical know how really pays off in not having to go to a shop for your install.
What a VRT setup comes down to is $$$...if spending $7k+ is out of the question then you may want to check out the Kinetic kit some more.
Also you'll need to know what kind of horsepower goals you're looking for...most people and myself shoot for 400whp so we'll start there since it's easy on the stock motor.
You'll need at least a T04E and manifold, C2 Stg 2 software, 42# injectors, full 3" exhaust, lowered compression, short runner intake (or the MKIII manifold but the SRI is easier to plumb), intercooler, uprated clutch and a limited-slip if you're smart. Water/meth injection is helpful, too. I did all that and it stayed together and is still together with the second owner.
If you just want a big boost in performance I'd hit the Kinetic kit with an intercooler and an uprated clutch.
the old engine bay since you wanted pics:

how it looks now with it's new owner

and the reason MKIV 12v VRTs aren't inventive is because Jeff's software from C2 motorsports works: it makes power and is reliable all with the VW ECU. Why f|_|ck with a good thing? But if you want all out, drag racing horsepower a standalone setup from 034 or Schimmel will get ya going, fa sho.

400 is out of my range, im looking for more like 300whp. And when you say lowered compression, do you mean a head/block spacer or some bottom end work? Whats stock compression? and how hard was it to relocate the coolant tank? And where did you get that SRI?

stock is 10.5:1 on the MKIV. To lower compression a simple head gasket spacer will do but it'd be nice to be able to afford bottom end work.
I'd think 300whp isn't out of the question for Kinetic's stg 2 setup.
The short runner is the Quickflow from C2 Motorsports. Was something like $699 or $799, I don't remember. To move the bottle I just ran more hose over to that side. I can't remember the exact procedure but if you have everything apart you see how to do it.

Re: Custom VR6 Turbo Setup? (agoodlife)

it eliminates the entire MKIV intake manifold. In fact, it uses a MKIII lower section so you can use the 42# Bosch injectors (MKIV injectors are different). The turbo was a Garrett T04E 60-1 .70/.69 hot side running 17psi which came on line around 3200 ish maybe a tad later. I never paid much attention because I'd be watching the looks of the mustangs and civics next to me

oh yeah, just a secondary bosch inline pump to produce more flow. Jeff @ C2 does his tune based on the stock FPR so you leave it be. The cooling system was never messed with but I did run mostly distilled water, probably a 25/75 mix in the summer along with some Redline water wetter. I never had a problem since the VR6 comes with a secondary water pump that runs after shutdown and my turbo was water cooled, as well, so a turbo timer wasn't really necessary.
